(ECNS) -- Police in the city of Tianjin busted an underground chain that catches and sells cats in a joint operation with the local stray pet conservation body on Wednesday.

The organization received tipoffs from pet lovers, who spotted suspicious vehicles with cats on board, which staff traced to a suburban neighborhood where more than 200 cats were found crammed into small cages.

Police stepped in early Wednesday morning, taking away two suspects for further questioning.

Based on previous knowledge, the pet organization suspects the cats were to be sold to restaurants for their meat.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
