Beijing calls for 'sincere' Japan attitude on nukes

The Chinese government said Friday that Japan should demonstrate "sincerity" and a "responsible attitude" as well as take concrete measures to dispel concerns from other countries over its excessive storage of nuclear materials.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing on Friday that the key to Japan's nuclear material issue is that Japan should demonstrate a "sincere and responsible attitude", and take practical actions to dispel concerns from other countries.
Hua's comment came after a report on Japan's nuclear material issues, drawn up by the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA) and the China Institute of Nuclear Information and Economics, was released on Friday morning in Beijing. It claimed that Japan has unnecessarily stockpiled nuclear materials, triggering safety concerns that could affect the world.
Citing the latest data from the Japanese government submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the study found that Japan has 47.8 tons of highly sensitive separated plutonium, 10.8 tons of which are stored in Japan, enough to make 1,350 nuclear warheads.
