Middle school in Nanjing offers 'boys' education'

The High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University Xin Cheng Junior School, a middle school in east China's Nanjing City, has launched a "Boys' Education" program to help boys at the school develop stronger physical and mental attributes.


On September 28, the school held a forum themed "Boys, are you ready?" and examined the boys' academic, physical and mental development. The school has also developed "courses for boys", targeting specifically at their mental and physical development.


Han Hui, Headmaster of the school, says that she made a proposal last year, and now the school is exploring the "courses for boys" with the aim to draw special attention to the their education and to adjust the current educational strategy. She also says the school's goal to build their boys into mature adults demonstrates its people-centered strategy.


Some surveys show that boys are falling behind both in their academic and physical development, leading to a "boy crisis". This crisis is not only in China but also occurring globally. A UNESCO survey has concluded that basic national education should prioritize boys' education. Many Western countries have also proposed programs to cope with this crisis.


Sun Yunxiao, an education expert, says that male and female teachers exert different influences on children, especially in behaviors and sports. Female teachers prefer obedient students while most boys are less obedient. Female teachers far outnumber male teachers currently. Such preferences and conditions have caused boys to behave more submissively. Therefore it is necessary to adjust the ratio of female and male teachers, as well as the curriculum and appraisal systems.
