China's Purchasing Managers' Index for manufacturing sector remained at 50.6 percent in December, flat with the November level, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing Tuesday.
This is the third consecutive month that the PMI figure has stayed above 50 percent, which demarcates expansion from contraction, according to a report from the CFLP.

Foreign minister highlights spirit of inclusiveness and mutual learning
Public diplomacy is a major direction for China to explore in the future, and tangible efforts will be made to boost public diplomacy and cultural exchanges, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in Beijing on Monday.
Yang made the remarks at the unveiling ceremony of the China Public Diplomacy Association at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
"Under the new circumstances, boosting public diplomacy and cultural exchanges will foster mutual understanding between China and the world, deepen the ties in between and strengthen efforts to achieve positive interactions and common development," Yang said.
The foreign minister highlighted the spirit of inclusiveness and mutual learning, and he also endorsed the role of enhancing dialogue and communication.
The CPDA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing professional consultation and coordination services to advance the development of China's public diplomacy.
Members of the China Public Diplomacy Association gathered earlier in the morning. Li Zhaoxing, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of China's National People's Congress, was elected president of the association.
In a speech during the conference, Li said the association will be dedicated to "promoting China's soft power" by mobilizing and coordinating social resources and civilian efforts for Chinese public diplomacy.
Shen Dingli, director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, said working toward the goal of a country's wider acceptance by the international community is one of the aims of a public diplomacy mission.
"The report of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has for the first time mentioned the concept of 'public diplomacy' as a crucial channel for boosting mutual understanding between China and other countries," Shen said.
Deepening cultural exchanges and telling the world the story of China's peaceful development are among the current priorities, Shen added.
In 2012, China's diplomacy made tangible efforts in promoting public diplomacy as well as cultural exchanges, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday.
Beijing will further beef up diplomatic efforts in missions relating to people, especially cultural exchanges involving talented youths, to "encourage social and public sentiment for developing ties with foreign countries", Hua said.
China has favorable conditions for public diplomacy and also faces serious challenges, said Ma Zhengang, deputy president of the CPDA and former Chinese ambassador to the United Kingdom.
"A solid job of public diplomacy requires tangible effects and fruits, rather than insubstantial things," Ma said at a mid-December public diplomacy seminar in Beijing.
Public diplomacy should serve to guard China's lawful rights and interests overseas and stabilize external circumstances, Ma added.

China's imports and exports of electronic and IT (information technology) products amounted to 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars in the first 11 months of 2012, up 4.1 percent from the same period last year.
Exports of electronic and IT products increased 4.5 percent to 627.3 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 33.9 percent of the country's total exports, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Monday.
Imports stood at 441.2 billion U.S. dollars, up 3.5 percent and accounted for 26.7 percent of China's total imports.
Exports of telecommunication equipment jumped 14.0 percent year on year to 133.1 billion U.S. dollars, while electronic devices gained 13.5 percent to 78.3 billion U.S. dollars, said the MIIT.
Over the January-November period, exports of home appliances decreased 9.3 percent year on year to 78.3 billion U.S. dollars, while electronic materials saw a decline of 18.5 percent to 4.8 billion U.S. dollars, according to the MIIT.

A new regulation punishing fraudulent behavior when granting academic degrees will take effect on Jan. 1, according to the Ministry of Education.
The rule is the first of its kind in China.
The regulation specifies that, in addition to plagiarism and fabricating data in the plagiarism, buying, selling or organizing the trade of academic degree thesis will also be treated as fraudulent behavior.
According to the regulation, colleges shall disqualify applicants for graduate, postgraduate, or doctoral degrees if they plagiarize or commit fraud in their academic degree thesis. The students shall be banned from applying for further degrees within three years.
Degrees already awarded shall be revoked if such misconduct is identified.
In addition, tutors of students who commit fraud as well as college officials will be punished, according to the regulation.

A new regulation punishing fraudulent behavior when granting academic degrees will take effect on Jan. 1, according to the Ministry of Education.
The rule is the first of its kind in China.
The regulation specifies that, in addition to plagiarism and fabricating data in the plagiarism, buying, selling or organizing the trade of academic degree thesis will also be treated as fraudulent behavior.

A set of newly-revised measures on the management and prevention of venereal diseases will take effect on Jan, 1, stipulating that patients with infections take necessary precautions to prevent infecting others.
According to the measures released by the Ministry of Health, patients should not intentionally spread venereal diseases to other people, and those doing so will be held liable for civil compensation, which could result in paying for treatment of others.
Criminal responsibility shall be pursued for those whose behaviors cause serious consequences, said the measures.
The document also strengthens protection of patients with venereal diseases by stipulating that no group or individual should discriminate against patients and their relatives, and their information should be kept confidential.

December's HSBC China final manufacturing PMI rose to a 19-month high of 51.5, thanks to stronger new business in-take and expansion of production, according to figures released by HSBC Monday.
The statistics suggest that China's economy remains on track for recovery as it enters 2013, said the HSBC report. Despite persistent external headwinds, as indicated by still contracting new export orders, the financial organization expects China's GDP to rebound to 8.6 percent in 2013, underpinned by China's continued policy support.
December's final headline PMI rose 1 point to 51.5, the fourth consecutive month of relative improvement in China's HSBC PMI, and the second above-50 level reading, since October 2011.
According to the report, this improvement was mainly driven by an expansion of production, on the back of a strong increase in new business inflows. The figure also confirmed that China's manufacturing sector is gaining momentum.
However, the external environment remains challenging in the coming 2013. This is reflected not only by the drop in the new export orders readings, but also by fast fading hopes of an effective resolution to the U.S.'s fiscal cliff crisis. Moreover, European economic fundamentals remain weak, the report analyzed.
Going forward, HSBC expects China to keep its pro-growth fiscal and monetary policy stance in place, and pursues an appropriate pace of growth in total social financing as well as tax cuts. Growth in infrastructure investment is expected to maintain strong momentum as there are still plenty key construction projects in the pipeline.

Award winning director Wong Kar Wai's Kung Fu epic "The Grandmaster", starring Tony Leung, Zhang Zi Yi and Chen Chang, is set to hit the big screen early January in China.
The first quarter of 2013 is looking to be an exciting one for Chinese-language films. Some of the biggest names in the Asian film industry will be showing their latest works, including Chow Yun Fat, Zhang Zi Yi, Wong Kar Wai and Stephen Chow. Here is a preview of some of the most anticipated films of 2013.
Kicking off the 2013 are a list of superheroes.
Award winning director Wong Kar Wai's Kung Fu epic "The Grandmaster", starring Tony Leung, Zhang Zi Yi and Chen Chang, is set to hit the big screen early January in China. The story focuses on the life of Ip Man, the master of the Wing Chun school of martial arts, and on his rivalry with other Kung Fu masters of his era.
"The Grandmaster" is Wong's first Kung Fu film. It was more than a decade in the making, and expectations are high. It will open the 2013 Berlin Film Festival in February.
And the monkey king is coming back in comedic genius Stephen Chow's new film "Journey to the West". The classic Chinese mythology movie is about the pilgrimage of the monkey king, who accompanies a Buddhist monk to retrieve a sacred Buddhist text in the Western Region. Although he won't be acting in the new film, fans will still get a taste of Chow's unique sense of humor.
"Journey to the West" stars Chinese actors Huang Bo, Wen Zhang, and Shu Qi as the three leads. It is set for release in China in early February, right before the Chinese New Year.
Also on the comedic side is a Chinese superman Starring Chen Bo Lin, "Machi Action" is a film about an actor who plays the role of a superhero on a television show. When his contract isn't renewed by his employers, the "superhero" struggles to survive as a working actor and is forced to take a hard look at his life.
"Machi Action" is produced by writer and director Giddens Ko, from Taiwan. Ko's first film "You Are the Apple of My Eye" took the Asian box office by storm in 2011, becoming the surprise hit of that year. "Machi Action" will be released on January 18th.

After nine-months of foot dragging, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education announced Thursday it would honor rules from the central government and no longer block out-of-towners from taking the national College Entrance Examinations.
But the local authorities, who are under pressure from long-time Beijingers to keep migrants out of the school system, waited until the last possible moment to announce the changes, causing untold inconvenience to thousands of families.
According to the new policy, high school graduates who studied in Beijing for three years with parents who have had resident permits, stable income, permanent accommodation, and social insurance for six years can sit the exam in Beijing. The policy is valid from the start of 2014.
But officials announced the new policy after December deadlines for registering for the College Entrance Examinations had passed.
Prior to the change in policy, parents without local household registration certificates were forced to send their children back to their hometowns to enroll in high school, usually for several years, or their children would be shut out of university.
Minister of Education Yuan Guiren promised in March that the ministry would launch a policy concerning non-local test takers by the end of 2012, and would request local commissions to implement the details.
Migrant parents said that their children deserve the same rights to education as local children, since they are also taxpayers. "Our child started her education here in primary schools and it's not fair to her," a mother surnamed Jin said, adding that her daughter fears that her college education might be postponed due to the lateness of the announcement.
Many parents could not wait until the policy's release, and decided to send their children overseas to study, or back home to register in schools in the regions where their parents are registered.
Discriminatory rules against migrants exist to protect the infrastructure of big cities like Beijing, which offer the best medical care, education and social services in the country. Local people fear the facilities will be overwhelmed by migrants.

Some Beijing residents started showing their discontent by either cursing the demonstrators at the complaint office, or making inflammatory remarks online. In one case, a Web user challenged the migrants to a physical fight.
Chu Zhaohui, a researcher with the China National Institute for Education Research, said that a fair city should offer equal treatment to everyone - long-time locals and migrants. "A child should be judged not by the location of their household registration, but by the content of their character," Chu said.
Local students need lower grades than students from other provinces to get into the country's top schools, many of which are in Beijing.

China's Ministry of Commerce said over the weekend that it would focus on improving logistics efficiency and boosting domestic consumption next year.
Implementing policies to promote logistics development in the country will be the ministry's key task next year, Vice Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng said at the closing ceremony of a two-day national commercial work conference that concluded Saturday.
"Funds would be preferably allocated to support the development of logistics systems for rural markets and agricultural products and development of the service industry," the ministry said in a statement Saturday, citing Gao.
"Logistics is one of the bottlenecks hindering the country's commerce and trade development. Poor logistics efficiency pushes up prices, eventually affecting the release of consumption potential in the country," Zhao Ping, deputy director of the Consumption Economics Department at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC), told the Global Times Sunday.
"Taking the '11/11' shopping spree (on November 11, known as Singles' Day) for example, sales were brisk but consumers complained about appallingly slow logistics. Improving management of the supply chain is key to boosting logistics efficiency," Zhao said.
On Wednesday, the State Council announced 10 measures to reduce logistics costs and improve efficiency, including cutting the water and electricity prices for agricultural product processing and circulation and lowering entry fees at agricultural product markets.
"To promote development of the country's logistics industry, the authorities could start with reducing taxes and fees levied on logistics companies, who have seen their transportation costs double after the value-added tax reform," He Dengcai, deputy head of China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, told the Global Times Sunday.
China launched a trial program for tax reform in Shanghai at the beginning of this year, replacing business tax with value-added tax for companies in the transportation and service industries in order to reduce their tax burden. But some logistics companies complained that it resulted in higher taxes.
"Excessive highway toll fees should also be eliminated to reduce transportation costs for logistics companies," He said.
MOFCOM also said Saturday that the ministry will seek areas in which it can make a breakthrough in boosting domestic consumption.
In a statement Friday, the ministry announced four measures to increase consumption, including boosting credit-based consumption, and encouraging consumption of environmentally friendly products.
"In 2012, the government focused on encouraging credit consumption by giving discounts on interest for consumers who bought home appliances and furnishing products with credit cards," said Zhao from CAITEC.
"Next year, the government will focus on supporting credit consumption of auto vehicles," Zhao said.

The amount is approximately half of the rare earth quota for the full year of 2012, the ministry said.
The first batch includes quotas of 13,563 tons of light rare earths and 1,938 tons of medium and heavy metals, according to the statement.
A total of 24 companies, including Baogang Group, Sinosteel Corporation and China Minmetals Corporation, have been authorized to export rare earth minerals in 2013.
Baogang Group got the highest quota of 1,811 tons.
Rare earth minerals are crucial for the defense, electronics and renewable-energy industries.
China's rare earth quota has been closely watched internationally, as the country provides over 90 percent of the world's rare earth consumption with some 36 percent of the world's total reserves.
In March, the US, Japan and the European Union filed a case with the World Trade Organization challenging China's rare earth quota system.
The quota in 2012 was 30,996 tons, and China exported some 13,000 tons of rare earths through authorized channels, only 41 percent of the government's quota.
In 2011, rare earth exports were only 61 percent of the export quota.
But that does not mean that China now supplies less of the world's rare earths.
Experts said that the amount of smuggled rare earths was nearly 1.2 times that of legally exported rare earths in 2011, and the smuggled products are sold much more cheaply, which has contributed to the falling prices of Chinese rare earths.
Recent media reports said that the Chinese government is considering launching rare earth reserves, a move experts said will help to stabilize rare earth prices.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), the country's securities regulator, will conduct its own investigations into the accuracy of the financial reports of companies in line to launch initial public offerings (IPOs) at mainland stock exchanges, according to statements from the commission Friday.
The CSRC will require companies in the mainland IPO pipeline, as well as their listing sponsors and accounting partners, to carry out self-examinations to ensure that the financial information they are disclosing ahead of their public float is authentic, accurate and objective, according to the statement. Self-inspection reports are to be sent to the CSRC before the end of March 2013, the commission stated, with random spot checks to follow from there.
Specifically, regulators will be looking for companies that are manipulating their profits or carrying out illicit maneuvers to dress up their balance sheets - such as self-deals, paying expenses under the name of related parties or marking down employee salaries on paper - the CSRC said.
The intensified regulatory scrutiny comes after a string companies posted dramatic drops in their profits soon after listing. According to statistics from Wind, a financial information provider, over one third of the 155 firms which launched IPOs on mainland boards in 2012 experienced falling profits at some point during the first three quarters, with 28 seeing their profits sag by more 20 percent year-on-year over the period.
Such sudden declines are mainly due to exaggerated financials as well as fraud, although the slowing domestic economy may have also contributed to the phenomenon to some extent, Zhou Yu, a financial expert at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times.
"Chinese regulators have to have stricter supervision over the financial reports of IPO candidates to boost investor confidence and enhance the long-term development of the stock market," Zhou said.
In late November, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange publicly censured Wanfu Biotechnology (Hunan) Agricultural Development Co - a ChiNext-listed company engaged in the research, development, production and sale of rice products - for artificially inflating its earnings and profits in its financial reports, a punishment that could lead the company to be delisted if it receives another two censures within 36 months.
Listing sponsors CITIC Securities and Guotai Junan Securities also received warning letters recently from regulators after two of the firms they sponsored saw their performances suddenly and sharply weaken soon after their public trading debuts.
The increasingly crowded IPO pipeline has also created an incentive for regulators to get tough with listing candidates, Zhou said. Currently, there are over 800 companies waiting for a decision on their IPO plans, according to data from the CSRC.
"Given the bearish stock market, regulators can never permit so many companies to enter the market, which makes them more determined to carry out stricter check on the companies' qualification," Zhou said.

China's securities regulator published Sunday interim measures allowing qualified securities brokers, insurance companies and private equity agencies to tap into a mutual fund market worth hundreds of billions of yuan, aiming to boost the capital market by intensified competition.
To be eligible for the mutual fund business, all the new entrants must have good corporate governance, more than three years of experience in asset management, and three consecutive years in the black, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said on its official website Sunday.
Securities brokerage firms and insurers are required to have managed assets of no less than 20 billion yuan, and private equity agencies must have a registered capital of at least 10 million yuan and managed assets of more than 3 billion yuan.
The new entrants will be able to attract more capital into the market thanks to their asset management experience and research and development strength, the CSRC said.
The new regulation indicates intensified competition for the mutual fund market, with the new entrants competing against existing companies.
Mutual fund management companies charge investors management fees for their services.
The total fees received by mutual fund companies were about 21 billion yuan in the first half of this year, according to statistics from Morning Star, a fund consulting firm.
Based on preliminary statistics, 16 securities brokers and 14 insurance asset management companies are qualified, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.

Securities brokerage firms and insurers are required to have managed assets of no less than 20 billion yuan, and private equity agencies must have a registered capital of at least 10 million yuan and managed assets of more than 3 billion yuan.
The new entrants will be able to attract more capital into the market thanks to their asset management experience and research and development strength, the CSRC said.
The new regulation indicates intensified competition for the mutual fund market, with the new entrants competing against existing companies.
Mutual fund management companies charge investors management fees for their services.
The total fees received by mutual fund companies were about 21 billion yuan in the first half of this year, according to statistics from Morning Star, a fund consulting firm.
Based on preliminary statistics, 16 securities brokers and 14 insurance asset management companies are qualified, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.

Top leaders urged greater efforts to combat poverty during visits to impoverished areas, in a move that analysts said reflects the leadership's resolve to achieve more balanced regional development.
Local authorities should place more emphasis on helping people out of poverty, Party chief Xi Jinping said during a weekend visit to Fuping county in Hebei province.
Policies designed to support agriculture, rural areas and alleviate poverty must be fully implemented, Xi said.
Xi also called the embezzlement of poverty-alleviation funds an "intolerable crime".
Xi arrived in Fuping after a journey of more than three hours from Beijing on Saturday afternoon in freezing weather.
Nestled in steep mountains, Fuping is among China's most impoverished counties. It has an annual net per capita income of 2,400 yuan ($390). Most of the people who live there are farmers.
Xi discussed incomes, food, education, and medical care as he visited the villages of Luotuowan and Gujiatai.
Sitting on the kang, a heatable brick bed, of Tang Rongbin, Xi said the farmer should pay more attention to his grandson's schooling as education will help the next generation lead a better life.
Xi also visited clinics and shops and talked with village officials.
"The most arduous task facing China in completing the building of a moderately prosperous society is in rural areas, especially poverty-stricken regions," Xi said.
Vice-Premier Li Keqiang visited rural areas in the Enshi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, Hubei province, on Saturday.
Li made it to the mountainous villages after traveling on narrow and snowbound roads and talked to farmers about their immediate concerns.
Impoverished areas are concentrated in the central and western regions, with a total population of 200 million, he said.
"If we are to build a moderately prosperous society, getting the 200 million people out of poverty will be a major task. But we have the resolve and tenacity to accomplish this," he told the villagers as he trudged on a muddy field.
Issues such as education, medical care and employment were also keenly discussed.
When a farmer told Li about his happiness over the area's medical insurance, Li interrupted him by saying that he wanted to hear more about what annoyed him.
Li called on the authorities of Enshi to develop local industries so that migrant workers will be able to find jobs in their hometowns.
The top leaders have a tradition of visiting families and experiencing issues at the grassroots before the start of the new year.
Their concern for people shows that the ruling Party is aiming to improve livelihoods in the less-developed regions, said Li Shi, a professor of wealth distribution at Beijing Normal University.
There are still lots of problems, including inefficiency in the use of poverty-alleviation funds and unfairness in their distribution, Li Shi said.
Authorities need to boost transparency, he said. "There are still lots of poor people and the income gap remains a tough problem for authorities."

The city broke ground yesterday on its newest school of higher learning, ShanghaiTech University, which will not only train top-level professionals but also act as an incubator for students to start new businesses.
The university in Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park in the Pudong New Area will work with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to train the country's top-level scientists and scientific professionals who can create innovative enterprises, officials said.
"We want to build it into the Silicon Valley in China," said Yin Jie, vice director of the Shanghai Education Commission.
"Different from a traditional college, the university will explore innovative methods in teaching and research and offer good business opportunities for students," Yin said.
The university will recruit postgraduate students in 2013 and undergraduate students in 2014. Established by the Shanghai government and the CAS, the university will have an annual recruitment quota for 4,000 postgraduate students and 2,000 undergraduates.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged local governments to break down unreasonable administrative barriers to foster a unified market via reforms in the country's economic system.
Reforms should respect the law of the market, because the market's force is irreplaceable, Li said at a forum held Friday in Jiujiang, east China's Jiangxi Province.
He also called for efforts to close the gap between urban and rural areas as well as those among different regions in China, as the potential of less-developed areas will provide huge momentum for China's economic development and the improvement of people's lives.
The forum focused on regional development along the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway, and it was attended by provincial-level officials including Jiangxi Party Chief Su Rong and Governor Lu Xinshe, Hubei Party Chief Li Hongzhong and Hunan Governor Xu Shousheng.
Administrative boundaries are not market territories, and governments should shift their functions and cast off restrictions within specific sectors as well as those among local authorities, Li Keqiang said.
In order to secure energetic and robust development, He urged forming a single market across the country and ensuring the free flow of market factors according to market rules.
He also told local governments to provide support for the market in terms of trans-regional transportation networks and streamlined job market and social security systems.
The path to China's sustainable and healthy development lies in the transformation of the development pattern and the adjustment of the economic structure. The greatest mission in the adjustment is boosting domestic demand, and there is huge potential in the central and western regions in this regard, he said.
Li said the regions along the Yangtze River are a lever to spur development in central and western China.
Li noted that the average urban Chinese resident makes three times more than his rural counterpart, and the average per capita GDP in the eastern regions was almost eight times that of some western ones.
To solve this problem, he urged working for urbanization, modern agriculture, urban-rural integration and the integration of development in the regions along the Yangtze River.
"It is like a game of Go chess. The developments in the board's corners and around the sides are vital, but the moves in the center are important, as well," Li said.
He required efforts to promote opening up both domestically and abroad, in order to boost demand.
Moreover, Li called for efforts to maintain the rule of law in the economy and to provide equal rights, equal opportunities and fair rules for all market participants.
Fair market competition will also create more jobs for the public, Li said.
At Friday's forum, Li also listened to reports and suggestions from local officials on relevant issues and held discussions with them.

China's move to scrap the 40 percent tariff on coking coal exports and possibly lift the tariff on crude coal exports could affect the global coal market, according to the manager of a coal export company.
China's Ministry of Finance has announced that the 40 percent tariff on coking coal exports will be scrapped starting January 2013.
Wang Songtao, assistant general manager of Shanxi Coal Imports and Exports Group Co., said if the problem of excess capacity on the domestic market worsens next year, it is possible that the government will lift the 10 percent export duty on crude coal.
"Once this happens, China's coal exports could surge, and this could become a major factor affecting the coal market in the Asia-Pacific region and even the world," Wang said Friday at a coal trading fair held in Taiyuan, capital of coal-rich Shanxi Province.
"For example, an annual export of 20 million tonnes could break the supply and demand balance and drag down global coal prices," he said.

A truck driver and a moped rider died yesterday morning in a six-vehicle collision at the Xupu Bridge in Shanghai, which spans the Huangpu River between Xuhui District and Pudong New Area.
The accident happened at 6:40am on the Xuhui approach to the bridge. Witnesses said a trailer truck plowed into vehicles in front of it in slippery conditions. The truck driver and moped rider were killed.
The truck smashed road barriers, shedding its cargo of concrete pipes which blocked bridge lanes. Traffic was disrupted for around two hours.

More than 5,100 monks from Jyegu Monastery in a Tibetan region of northwest China's Qinghai Province on Friday held a mass prayer service, ending a six-day gathering for world peace.
The monks from 74 monasteries chanted Tibetan Buddhist scriptures alongside thousands of believers in a new scripture hall built after a 2010 earthquake.
"The service is to pray for world peace, the nation's prosperity and and people's health and safety," said Khenpo Ngangor, an abbot of the monastery.
"We hope the natural disasters threatening people in the world will end, and that all families live happily and stay healthy," the abbot said.
The 2,100-year-old Jyegu Monastery is the largest and most influential temple of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu.
The monastery has held the mass prayer service for the past 14 years around Oct. 15 on the Tibetan calendar.

China's pharmaceutical market is expected to soar to 2.3 trillion yuan (369.2 billion U.S. dollars) by 2020, up from 926.1 billion yuan this year, according to a report.
The Report on China's Pharmaceutical Market 2012, published Friday by the Social Sciences Academic Press, noted that the country's aging population will give rise to increased demand for medicine, while a fast-growing economy is expected to boost both the social insurance level and people's consumption capacities.
According to the report, these factors will help the country's pharmaceutical market expand at an average annual rate of 12 percent by 2020.
The report also pointed out various problems in the country's pharmaceutical industry, noting that many Chinese pharmaceutical companies haven't realized large-scale operation and their shares in the high-end drug market pale in comparison to that of foreign groups.
Moreover, a basic medicine system that ensures commonly-used drugs be sold at production cost has led to a relatively stagnant market for companies that mainly produce such pharmaceutical products.

A court in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Friday rejected a village official's appeal against his two-year sentence to a re-education through labor camp.
The Higher People's Court of Chongqing upheld the previous verdict on Ren Jianyu, an official in Pengshui County, who lodged an appeal last month after the Chongqing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court dismissed the lawsuit Ren's father filed on his son's behalf.
Ren, 25, was arrested on Aug. 17, 2011 after he forwarded and commented on more than 100 pieces of "negative information." Without due process, he was sentenced to two years in a labor camp for "incitement to subvert state power" the following month.
On Aug. 15 this year, Ren's father filed a lawsuit on his son's behalf, which called for Ren's release.
On Nov. 19, the Chongqing municipal re-education through labor committee freed Ren after reviewing the case, saying the punishment was "improper."
On Nov. 20, the Chongqing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court rejected the father's lawsuit, saying "the appeal should have come within three months after the re-education term was issued on Sept. 24, 2011."
Ren filed an appeal with the higher court on Nov. 28.
The higher court has upheld the previous verdict in its ruling, saying Ren was able, but failed to file a lawsuit within three months upon receiving the re-education term.

The year of snake in the Chinese zodiac cycle is just around the corner. Truly exciting news for all mothers-to-be including Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. Babies born in the year of snake are said to be lucky and insightful.
When Mao Shuting became pregnant in May, her family was overjoyed for more than one reason. Many Chinese believe that 2013, the year of the snake is auspicious. And here's Mao, with 10 others mothers-to-be, preparing for the birth of their little ones.
Mao Shuting, Expectant Mother, said, "I was told that a baby born in the year of snake is gifted with artistic talent. My baby is going to be a Pisces, and Pisces have a very good sense of art. My husband and I are both working in the art industry, so I think it is such a blessing for us to have this baby."
And another mother to be is the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. The baby, who will be third in line to the British throne, will also be born in the year of the snake.
The Snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac. It's known as the deepest thinker of the 12-year cycle. Fortune teller Dong Yilin, is making his predictions for those young and old born in the year of snake. And he believes the year 2013 will be a very good year for all those born under this auspicious sign.
Dong Yilin, I-Chiing Master, said, "People who are born in the year of snake are very good at putting aside worries and moving on with life. "
The Year of the Snake doesn't begin until February 10th, but some have already started hunting for snake coins to bring them good luck. This manager of a gold store in Beijing says snake coins are already hot on the market.
"Snake coins are a perfect combination of Chinese traditional culture of animal signs and gold. They are mainly made of gold, silver and other precious metals, and they have very high reserve value."
For this year's animal, more than 80-thousand Dragon coins were sold. For the new lunar year, about 50-thousand snake coins are expected to hit the market.
If it's not lucky for the buyers, it's definitely lucky for the sellers.

First up tonight, China's industrial profit growth sped up in November, another indication that the world's second-largest economy is on the path to recovery. Let's get all the details.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, major Chinese industrial firms saw their profits surge some 640 billion yuan in November, nearly 23 percent more than a year earlier. The figure dwarfed the 20.5 percent recorded in October and 7.8 percent in September.
Meanwhile, the strong growth in the single month means profits in the first 11 months climbed by 3 percent year-on-year to around 4.7 trillion yuan. The growth rate in the January-October period was a half-percent, and about a 2-percent decline was seen in the first three quarters.
Private firms outperformed others, achieving 18-percent profit growth in the first 11 months. State-run firms and overseas-funded companies suffered profit drops of more than 6 percent during the same period.
Out of the key industries, about three quarters saw a profit increase in the first 11 months. These included petroleum and gas exploitation, food processing, electric and thermal power production, and car manufacturing. By contrast, industrial sectors, such as ferrous metal processing and chemical manufacturing, were the biggest losers.
Analysts say the data, together with other indicators, shows China's economy is gaining steam again after a nearly two-year slowdown.

China's first transmission-type three-dimensional surveying and mapping satellite, Space Mapping-I system, formally started the networking operation recently, according to the Space Mapping Satellite Application Management Center recently. This was another breakthrough after China's successful launching of the No. 01 Satellite of the transmission-type three-dimensional surveying and mapping satellite, Space Mapping-I system, on August 24, 2010.
The No. 01 and No. 02 Satellites of the Space Mapping-I system, China's first satellites to achieve networking operation, can greatly improve the surveying and mapping efficiency and geometric control capability, accelerate the image-capturing speed in the target areas after seamless splicing of the images captured by the two satellites, and enhance information timeliness.
It is a major breakthrough in China's aerospace field and boasts the milestone significance in the development of China's surveying and mapping cause. It marks that China's has fully mastered the key technology of the transmission-type three-dimensional surveying and mapping satellite.
According to a person in charge of the center, the Space Mapping-I satellites are China's first domestic new-generation transmission-type 3D surveying and mapping satellites with completely self-owned property rights.
The Space Mapping-I satellite system has currently produced various types of satellite imaging products and geographic information products, and provided imaging as well as surveying and mapping support for tens of government bodies and institutions including the China Resources Satellite Center, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the State Forestry Administration, playing important role in the national economic construction.
It is learned that China will continue to launch space mapping series satellites in the future so as to jointly constitute a complete aerospace surveying and mapping system together with the Space Mapping-I system and form a space-to-ground detection network with all-weather, all-time, all-factor and multi-resolution functions.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also says China's industrial output is on track to grow 10 percent this year, from 2011. And the government is aiming for the same annual growth rate in 2013.
The ministry says the industrial sector, which employs just over 90 million people, could contribute to 40 percent of the country's GDP this year. The government has also set the 2013 target for China's telecom industry, saying total telecom businesses will grow up 10 percent.
Other major targets also include maintaining industrial corporate profits and the export value of industrial products. The central government will also tackle the problem of overcapacity, especially in China's iron and steel industries.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also says China's industrial output is on track to grow 10 percent this year, from 2011. And the government is aiming for the same annual growth rate in 2013.
The ministry says the industrial sector, which employs just over 90 million people, could contribute to 40 percent of the country's GDP this year. The government has also set the 2013 target for China's telecom industry, saying total telecom businesses will grow up 10 percent.
Other major targets also include maintaining industrial corporate profits and the export value of industrial products. The central government will also tackle the problem of overcapacity, especially in China's iron and steel industries.

China's railway investment will maintain steady growth, with 600 billion yuan (96.2 billion U.S. dollars) to 650 billion yuan to be invested next year, said the country's top economic planner.
Investment demand in China's railway construction will reach 1.8 trillion yuan in the 2013-2015 period, China Securities Journal reported Thursday, citing a report on railway development from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
China will continue the construction of 24,000 kilometers of railways in the next three years, which will require a total investment of 1.5 trillion yuan, Zhang Jiangyu, a transportation official with the NDRC, was quoted as saying.
Zhang said he expects construction on a number of new major projects to start during the 2013-2015 period, including 4,500 km of high-speed railways allowing speeds of over 200 km per hour, which will require a total investment of 500 billion yuan.
Although high-speed rail construction stagnated after a bullet train crash near the eact China city of Wenzhou left 40 people dead in July 2011, China has cautiously resumed the construction and operation of high-speed railways this year.
Fixed-asset investment in railways rose 3.1 percent year on year to 506.97 billion yuan during the first 11 months of this year, accounting for 80 percent of this year's investment plan, according to data from the Ministry of Railways.
Nearly 4,000 km of railways will have been put into operation by the end of this year, 2,932 km of which will be high-speed rails and inter-city express railways, according to the NDRC report.
China currently has more than 9,300 km of high-speed rails in operation, as the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway, the world's longest high-speed line, opened on Wednesday.
More than 6,000 km of railways are likely to start operating in 2013, more than 3,000 km of which will be high-speed railways and 3,300 km will be conventional lines, Zhang forecast.

China's Defense Ministry on Thursday said the Chinese military "closely monitors" and is "highly vigilant" concerning relevant Japanese Air Self-Defense Force activity in the airspace over the Diaoyu Islands.
Ministry of Defense spokesman Yang Yujun made the remarks at a press briefing while commenting on Japanese fighter jets' recent interception of a Chinese marine surveillance plane patrolling areas around the Diaoyu Islands.
"We will decisively fulfill our tasks and missions while coordinating with relevant departments such as maritime supervision organs, so as to safeguard China's maritime law enforcement activities and protect the country's territorial integrity and maritime rights," Yang said.
Yang said it is "justifiable" for the Chinese military to provide security in waters under China's jurisdiction, and other countries are "in no position" to make irresponsible remarks in this regard.
"China-Japan defense relations are an important and sensitive part of bilateral ties, and the Japanese side should face up to the difficulties and problems that currently exist in bilateral ties," Yang said.
He also called on Japan to take concrete steps to properly handle relevant issues and maintain the overall situation of Sino-Japanese ties.
Media reports say Japan's Air Self-Defense Force sent F-15 fighter jets to the area on Saturday to intercept a Chinese marine surveillance plane bound for the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.
