A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday welcomed the resumption of stalled peace talks between Palestine and Israel.

Chief negotiators for Palestine and Israel met in Washington on Monday to prepare for the renewal of their peace talks that were suspended in October 2010 due to Israel's expansion of settlement activities on occupied Palestinian lands.

The two-day talks chaired by Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestine's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat are aimed at negotiating the establishment of a Palestinian state and the peaceful co-existence of both countries.

At a press conference held Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have agreed to meet again within the next two weeks either in Israel or the Palestinian territories.

The two parties have also agreed to negotiate for a minimum of nine months in an attempt to reach an agreement on ending their conflict that has lasted for over six decades.

In a written statement, spokesman Hong Lei said China supports the two sides in overcoming obstacles and working together to constantly push for substantive progress in the peace talks.

China will be committed to promoting peace negotiations between the two sides, he said, adding that China will work with the international community to make contributions to the Palestinian-Israeli peace process as well as the security and stability of the Middle East region.

Sun Yang became only the second man to defend his gold medal in the 800 meters men's freestyle at the FINA World Championships when he swam to a comfortable victory in the Palau St Jordi in Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Sun Yang finished with 7:41.36, which is the fastest time of 2013 and 2.27 seconds ahead of American Michael McBroom, who was second ahead of Canada's Ryan Cochrane.

The reigning world champions led the race at the first turn and looked comfortable in the following laps as he maintained a narrow lead over Jordan Harrison and Cochrane, although Harrison dropped away at around 400 meters as Connor Jaeger came into the reckoning.

By 550 meters McbBroom had also raced up the field and was in second, jut half a second behind the Chinese swimmer, before Sun Yang began to stretch his lead with around 150 meters remaining.

From leading the race by a question of centimeters, Sun suddenly led by meters as the closing three laps saw him give a demonstration of his quality.

China has now won three consecutive World Championship gold medals in this event, equaling the winning streak of the Australian team between 2001 to 2005.

Sun Yang has now won two gold medals in this World Championship meet in Barcelona as he won gold in the 400 meter freestyle on Sunday and he must be a favorite to complete a spectacular treble when he races in the 1,500 meters when the event closes on Aug 4.

Emerging markets: Not yet end of growth story
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2013/08-01/75509.shtml
Jul 31st 2013, 23:43

2013-08-01 08:43 Xinhua

After leaving the world spellbound with a decade of stunning economic performance, emerging markets have now found themselves at a crossroads.

Facing worsening global economic pains that have left many developed powers in disarray, the emerging markets, once the sprinters of the world economy, are seeing an obvious slowdown in growth.

A wave of pessimism about the emerging-market economic outlook has begun to spread and sparked market overreaction. Some U.S. and European investment agencies have even forecast "the death of the emerging-market growth story."

However, seen from a wider perspective, the prospects are not so gloomy. A slower pace of growth might just herald a new round of policy adjustment and bolder reform initiatives, rather than mark the end of the growth miracle.

Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins said the turbulence in emerging markets in recent months was mainly due to short-term capital flow in the chase of higher returns, and most experts believed this would not deal a fatal blow to emerging markets.

It is true the challenges the emerging markets face are grave: capital flight, export decline and moribund stock markets. But it is unnecessary to stretch the problem and fret about it inordinately.

The growth of the emerging economies may not be as dazzling as before, but, even at a slower pace, they will remain a major contributor to world economic growth from the medium- and long-term perspectives.

As many economists point out, emerging markets still have an edge when it comes to population, and they boast huge domestic market demand.

Ruchir Sharma, managing director of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, said emerging nations still represented 80 percent of the world's population, and just 40 percent of global GDP, so there was room for growing prosperity.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast more than half the world's growth in consumption demand would come from emerging markets from 2011 to 2015, and their export growth would account for about 40 percent of the world's trade growth. With a huge and diversified consumption demand, the emerging powers will serve as an engine for sustained world economic growth.

Moreover, the growth potential of the emerging markets is unlikely to abate, taking their economic fundamentals into consideration, and the risk control ability of these countries has been considerably enhanced.

The IMF projected emerging markets would grow 6 percent annually from 2013 to 2018, a pace still much faster than that of the advanced economies and the world average.

Deutsche Bank also said in a July report that, compared to 2008, the ability to withstand external shocks has been strengthened in all emerging markets, except for Turkey.

The road of development may be bumpy for the emerging markets, but their growth story is by no means reaching its end.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs Lloyd C. Blankfein has said, new opportunities always come with challenges, and emerging markets still yield the highest returns and they will still serve as another engine for global economic growth.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan addresses a reception held by China's Ministry of Defense to celebrate the 86th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, July 31, 2013. (Xinhua/Wang Ye)

China will firmly pursue a path of peaceful development and enhance military cooperation with foreign countries to contribute to world peace and development, Minister of Defense Chang Wanquan said Wednesday.

China will unremittingly follow the national defense policy that is defensive in nature, strengthen military cooperation and mutual trust with other countries, participate in regional and international security affairs and play a positive role in the fields of international politics and security, Chang said.

The defense minister's remarks came at a reception held at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing to celebrate the 86th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Liberation Army(PLA).

"Peace, development and cooperation have become the consensus of the people all over the world, yet the world is not peaceful," said Chang, who is also a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the Communist Party of China and a state councilor.

The Chinese people love peace and the armed forces will always firmly safeguard peace, he said.

In regards to Taiwan, Chang said the realization of national reunification is irresistible, stressing the mainland will grasp the trend of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, firmly oppose and curb the secessionist attempts of "Taiwan independence" forces, and firmly safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation.

The principal body of China's armed forces, the PLA encompasses the army, the navy, the air force and the Second Artillery Corps.

China's armed forces follow the absolute leadership of the CPC and sharpen its combat capabilities, highlighting the rule of law and strict management to build a strong army, Chang said.

The troops will also develop their solidarity with the people, support the country's economic development and promote social harmony and stability, he said.

The reception was also attended by CMC members Fang Fenghui, Zhang Yang, Zhao Keshi, Zhang Youxia, Wu Shengli, Ma Xiaotian and Wei Fenghe.

Xiaomi shifts into low end of mobile sector
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2013/08-01/75511.shtml

2013-08-01 08:46 China Daily

Xiaomi Corp's experience store attracts many visitors at the 2013 Global Mobile Internet Conference on May 7. Xiaomi released the Hongmi smartphone, priced at 799 yuan ($130), at a Beijing news briefing on Wednesday. [Provided to China Daily]

The company officially offers the first batch of products on Aug 12

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi Corp launched a sub-brand "Hongmi" (red rice) on Wednesday that targets the country's entry-level smartphone buyers.

With rumors circulating that Apple Inc will introduce cheaper iPhones for Chinese clients in the second half, Beijing-based Xiaomi aims to beat its rival to the punch in the lower-end market.

Xiaomi released the Hongmi smartphone, priced at 799 yuan ($130), at a Beijing news briefing on Wednesday.

Hongmi has a 4.7-inch screen, Android-based device equipped with MediaTek Inc's 1.5-gigahertz quad-core processor. The dual-card handset supports China Mobile Ltd's second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) networks.

Lei Jun, founder and chief executive officer of Xiaomi, said the launch of the Hongmi signifies Xiaomi's first attempt to explore the nation's affordable (below 1,000 yuan) smartphone market.

"I believe the Hongmi is the best product among all 1,000-yuan smartphones" in China, Lei said. "Xiaomi does not care much about sales or shipments, but we strive to produce the finest devices" for our costomers, Lei said at the event.

Since Apple is hatching a plan to slash its iPhone price and garner more Chinese buyers, some Xiaomi officials said the "birth" of Hongmi is a preparation for the looming price-cut trend.

"People will pay more attention to cheaper but capable smartphones," one said.

Apple's Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook was in Beijing again, said officials at China Mobile Ltd on Wednesday.

Xi Guohua, China Mobile's chairman, met with Cook on Tuesday to discussion cooperation, said Li Jun, spokesman of China Mobile, via a text message.

Analysts said Cook might have come to China to discuss Apple's shrinking sales.

There's no doubt that Hongmi will open more doors for Xiaomi. Compared with the middle and high ends of the smartphone market, where Xiaomi has been operating, the entry-level market boasts many more potential buyers.

According to data from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, China's biggest e-commerce company by sales, 61 percent of the mobile phones sold on the Taobao marketplace and the business-to-customer platform Tmall.com were priced below 1,000 yuan. About one-fifth of the mobile phones sold cost 1,000 yuan to 2,000 yuan, while only 18 percent cost more than 2,000 yuan.

"The entry-level smartphone market is definitely the market offering the most consumers," said Li Yanyan, an analyst with Beijing-based research firm Analysys International.

Domestic telecom operators have actively promoted and launched market campaigns for affordable smartphones, which help raise consumer awareness, she pointed out.

Sandy Shen, an analyst with Gartner China, said the launch of the Hongmi also fills a void for Xiaomi in cooperation with the nation's biggest mobile operator, China Mobile.

"Previously, Xiaomi partnered with both China Unicom and China Telecom, but we never heard any information about cooperation with China Mobile," Shen said.

China Mobile, although struggling in the domestic 3G competition because it adopted a relatively inferior 3G technology, has gradually got on track to catch up with rivals in recent months.

China Mobile sold more than 59 million mobile phones for its 3G network in the first half of this year, said Ma Jingxin, vice general manager of China Mobile Terminal Co, during the same event. Ma added the figure was close to China Unicom's 3G mobile phone shipments.

The Hongmi smartphone is available for pre-orders on Tencent Holdings Ltd's Qzone, a social-networking platform with more than 60 million users. On Aug 12, Xiaomi will officially offers the first batch of products.

Although Chinese media have reported that Tencent was about to invest in Xiaomi, officials at Xiaomi have denied any such plan.

"Qzone is China's biggest social-networking website and it closely aligns with Xiaomi's targeted clients," Li Wanqiang, vice-president of Xiaomi, said.

"Social-networking platforms are the major battlefield (for Xiaomi marketing and selling its products)," Li added.

China's structural tax cuts boost economic vitality
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2013/07-31/75479.shtml
Jul 31st 2013, 07:49

2013-07-31 16:49 Xinhua

China's latest efforts to implement structural tax cuts will benefit its economic restructuring and promote steady growth, analysts have said.

Starting from Aug. 1, value-added tax (VAT) reforms, which replace the turnover tax with a value-added duty in transport and some service sectors, will expand nationwide from the current 12 provinces and municipalities to further reduce tax burdens on businesses.

Also effective on Aug. 1, China will suspend the VAT and turnover tax for small businesses with monthly sales of less than 20,000 yuan (3,236 U.S. dollars), which will benefit more than six million small companies and boost employment and income for tens of millions of people.

VAT refers to a tax levied on the difference between a commodity's price before taxes and its cost of production, while turnover tax refers to a levy on a business's gross revenues.

Bai Jingming, deputy head of the Fiscal Science Research Institute under the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said that expanding the pilot VAT reform is an important step in the reform of the fiscal and taxation systems.

"It calls for an improvement in the VAT system, as well as the adjustment of tax revenue distribution between the central and local governments," Bai said.

The VAT reform was first introduced in Shanghai in January last year and was later expanded to another 11 regions, including the cities of Beijing, Tianjin and Shenzhen.

"The structural tax cuts will help alleviate tax burdens for businesses and individuals, boost business vitality and increase employment and incomes," said Zhang Bin, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government think tank.

In the first five months of the year, the reform eased tax burdens by 40.6 billion yuan for 1.29 million businesses in the regions that first piloted the program, according to the State Administration of Taxation (SAT).

The tax break for small and micro-sized enterprises, which usually accept interest rates 10 to 30 percent above the guideline rate, will ease the credit crunch and inject vigor into job-generating small businesses, Zhang added.

Statistics from SAT showed that the tax break will reduce the tax burden for small and micro-sized enterprises by 20 billion yuan.

Analysts believe that the structural tax reductions do not simply mean cutting tax rates, but are a demonstration of the government's determination to secure stable growth and restructure the economy amid a continuous economic slowdown and increasing risks in the financial market.

"The structural tax reduction will significantly boost economic growth and optimize the country's economic structure," said Liu Shangxi, deputy head of the Fiscal Science Research Institute under the MOF.

China's economy has been stuck in a protracted slowdown, easing to 7.5 percent in the second quarter from 7.7 percent in the first three months.

The government has adopted a different approach by not launching a one-off fiscal and monetary stimulus package, but instead introducing a set of market-oriented reforms to boost the economy.

As part of the reforms, the structural tax cuts serve as an important role in "developing strategic and emerging industries, energy-saving businesses and the service sector by giving enterprises more access to credit and alleviating their tax burdens," said Liu.

In the long run, the structural tax cuts will provide an equal institutional environment for healthy economic development, he said.

BASF said yesterday that it is investing around 90 million euros ($119 million) to build a resin plant in Shanghai to meet demand for automotive coatings in Asia.

Production will start in the second half of 2015, the German chemicals maker said. Resin is a key intermediate used in the production of coatings.

The new plant in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park will be adjacent to another BASF automotive coatings plant, which broke ground early this year. The company expects the close proximity to allow for more synergies and efficiency.

"The continued investment in our infrastructure and capacity demonstrates our strong commitment to supporting our customers' growing business in the automotive market in Asia-Pacific, particularly in China," said Peter Fischer, senior vice president for coatings solutions in Asia-Pacific.

Beijing Enterprises Holdings Ltd said it will pay HK$8.22 billion (US$1.1 billion) to its parent for a 22.01 percent stake in city gas distributor, China Gas Holdings Ltd.

As part of the deal, Beijing Enterprises Holdings, a conglomerate with businesses from brewery to sewage and water treatment, will pay HK$2 billion in cash and issue 113 million new shares at HK$55 apiece to its parent, according to a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange yesterday.

Beijing Enterprises Holdings will become the biggest shareholder of China Gas upon completion of the transaction.

The parent company, Beijing Enterprises Group, last year increased its stake in China Gas after ENN Energy Holdings, another city gas distributor, and Sinopec Corp, China's second-largest oil company, made a hostile offer for China Gas but their bid failed.

Illegal tour firms face crackdown
http://www.ecns.cn/2013/07-31/75421.shtml

Tour agencies with one-day packages will have to log on through an electronic code with bus operators, according to a plan unveiled last week by the Beijing Commission of Tourism Development.

The move targets unqualified tour companies.

Tour guides and bus drivers have to keep the itinerary and special code for inspection during the tour. By scanning the code, the inspectors can check tour information and verify whether the agency is legal.

The practice will be applied to all travel agencies, said Yu Debin, deputy head of the Beijing Commission of Tourism Development. He didn't say when the plan will take effect.

One-day tour operators are becoming increasingly popular. However, many of them are illegal as more established companies do not focus too much on the one-day market.

These illegal tour agencies forge documents and sign a printed contract with legal agencies to rent tour buses.

The government measures to stop the illegal agencies from operating will include checks at scenic spots, said Yu.

In early July, an online video sparked outrage after its showed a guide threatening tourists with a knife and abusive language because they did not buy enough from shops that he had taken them to.

It seemed the guide had an arrangement with the shopkeepers that he would deliver a quota of tourists to them per day in exchange for cash. He was later detained by police and found to be unlicensed.

However, there are still many private travel agencies which give out leaflets advertising cheap one-day tours.

For example, the price of the Great Wall Trip offered by Beijing Hub of Tour Dispatch, a State-owned travel agency, is 180 yuan ($29) per person. However, an agency named Golden Trip is advertising the same trip for 80 yuan.

"We have seen some really cheap offers arranged by Chinese agencies, but we dare not take the chance since we cannot speak Chinese," said Francois Malbranque, an undergraduate from France, who visited Tian'anmen Square with friends last week.

The government should improve services for individual tourists and it should authorize one-day-tour permits for a certain number of travel agencies to ensure quality, said Zhang Hui, a tourism management professor at Beijing Jiaotong University.

Chen Xu, a researcher from China Tourism Academy, said the government should publicize legal travel agencies and tell tourists how to distinguish legal agencies from illegal ones.

Retrial in qigong 'master' suit
2013-07-31 11:06 China Daily Web Editor: Wang Fan

The High People's Court in Jiangxi province held a retrial on Tuesday in a case in which self-styled "qigong master" Wang Lin sued one of his former apprentices for 33 million yuan ($5.38 million).

The judge did not give the ruling after the trial on Tuesday.

Neither Wang nor the defendant, Zou Yong, was at court, and neither side presented new evidence. Attorneys for both Wang and Zou declined to talk to the media.

Wang has been in the public spotlight recently because of the many published photos of him hobnobbing with celebrities. His claim of "supernatural powers" has raised doubts among the public.

Zou, chairman of the Pingxiang-based Jiangxi Tianyu Fuel Group, had told the media that Wang does not have supernatural powers, and uses tricks to swindle money from his followers.

According to a report in Beijing Time, Wang's lawyer, Xu Yiquan, told the media on Monday that Zou was defaming Wang only because the two have had financial disputes.

Zou was ordered after the first trial to pay Wang 33 million yuan.

According to media reports, Zou had borrowed 23 million yuan from Wang on Aug 30, 2010. Zou paid back some of the money, but still owed Wang 13 million yuan until May 28, 2012.

Both parties agreed that Zou would give Wang his villa, located in Yijing Garden of Luohu district in Shenzhen, and worth 50 million yuan, after which Wang would give 37 million yuan to Zou.

However, on May 29, 2012, before Zou finished the house's transferal procedures, Zou asked Wang to pay 20 million in advance for the villa, and promised to transfer the house before July 5, 2012, to Wang Wu, whom Wang Lin had designated to receive the villa.

Wang Lin paid 20 million yuan to Zou that same day, but Zou didn't transfer the house to Wang Wu.

Wang Lin then sued to cancel the agreement and asked Zou to return the 33 million yuan plus compensation for lost interest.

The Pingxiang Intermediate People's Court ruled in the first trial that Zou has violated the agreement, and the house purchase and sale contract should be canceled. The court asked Zou to give 33 million yuan to Wang. Zou subsequently appealed to the high court.

Zou has said that he had paid 5 million yuan in fees to become Wang's disciple in 2009.

Jiang Haining, a lawyer from the Gaorui law firm in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, told China Daily he believes that because the house is real property, the case should be handled in the court where the property is located, not Jiangxi's local court.

"It should be within one year since the agreement was established that the prosecutor has the right to cancel the contract," Jiang said.

Tuesday's trial opened as health authorities in Jiangxi's Luxi county launched an investigation into Wang's alleged illegal medicinal practices.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission said on Tuesday at an online interview that it has asked Jiangxi province to investigate the case and, if the province finds that Wang illegally practiced medicine, the commission will punish him.

China Central Television broadcast an investigative report on Wang on Sunday, describing him as a fraud who made his fortune by fooling celebrities and government officials.

Local authorities acknowledged on Monday that they will investigate Wang's practices.

Online shopping is no longer exclusively for city dwellers, as residents of smaller locales are now spending more money buying goods on the Internet.

People living in counties and townships spent an average of 5,628 yuan ($910.7) online in 2012, almost 1,000 yuan more than their urban counterparts, according to a report released Monday by Taobao, China's leading online shopping website.

The report showed that township residents placed an average of 54 orders each on Taobao in 2012, far more than the 39 orders placed by e-shoppers living in China's first- and second-tier cities.

Major international brands like Estee Lauder have sold well in counties and townships. Shoppers in those locations spent an average of 765 yuan apiece on Estee Lauder cosmetics, slightly more than the 652 yuan spent by first- and second-tier city residents.

Over 30 million county residents spent a combined total of 179 million yuan on Taobao, according to figures posted online by the company.

Although residents' incomes tend to be lower in small towns and counties, their online spending habits are similar to those of urban residents, according to a report released in March by McKinsey Global Institute.

The McKinsey report said that for every 100 yuan spent online, 57 yuan is spent by people in third- and fourth-tier cities, greater than the national average of 39 yuan.

The county-level city of Yiwu, ranked by Forbes as the richest county in China, topped the Taobao ranking, with online spending totaling 3.4 billion yuan.

Residents in Qingliu county in southeast China's Fujian province spent a staggering 20,151 yuan, or 72.55 percent of their combined income, on online shopping. In first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the ratio has yet to exceed 27 percent.

The report also showed that 22 percent of Taobao customers in small towns used its mobile application to shop online. But the percentage declined to 17 percent in first- and second-tier cities.

The latest data from Activision Blizzard indicates that players of World of Warcraft have decreased from 8.3 million to 7.7 million in the last quarter, Xinhuanet.com reported.

The famous game that once witnessed more 12 million registered players at its peak, has lost out to more free and competitive games sprouting from the Chinese market such as Leagues of Legends which threatened the quantity of former players in World of Warcraft.

AB has announced recently that they would pay more attention to major adjustments of the game as well as narrow down the size of the development team to the new MMO -- mass online interactive games -- projects like "Titan". Nowadays, the market is more competitive than before.

Although the number of players has decreased 0.6 million, World of Warcraft is still the most popular and profitable mass interactive game all over the world.

Some new MMO games will be released in the short term such as The Elder Scrolls Online and Wild Star. AB hopes to make some adaption so that it will maintain the leading position in the game market. For instance, Guild War 2 will be updated every two week only despite only being charged once. Other kinds of games, simultaneously, adopted free modes to appeal to more new players

AB has already tried to halt the loss such as building in-game stores in Asia, establishing more new and free games for casual players.

Some insiders suggested the product life cycle of World of Warcraft is vital and the game could have passed its shelf life. The darling of the online game industry has lingered for a long time and lost some of its fashionable appeal. The loss of two million players in last two quarters is an incredible shock for management at World of Warcraft.

He's now the third registered masseur for breast milk in the country, which has drawn a mixed response from the public. Masseur is a high-paying job, as an hour of breastfeeding massage usually charges 200 to 500 yuan (US$32 to 81). "It is a rising industry and will be the direction for my development," Yang said, but he has only served two women at 200 yuan each time. [Photo: IC]

Men's clothing retailer Bosideng London, a Chinese brand, has agreed to a commercial partnership with English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

Bosideng London will be the club's Official Formal Menswear Partner during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 football seasons. The announcement has coincided with Tottenham Hotspur's visit to Hong Kong for the Barclays Asia Trophy 2013.

Bosideng London's premium menswear collection was launched in 2012 and is the first flagship store for the brand outside the People's Republic of China, situated near London's exclusive and world-famous Mayfair area.

Bosideng London will provide formal wear to the first team, management and board of the Barclays Premier League Team. The agreement includes the provision of suits, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories from its latest collection, as well as a presence across the club's website and social media channels to directly engage with fans across the world.

Tottenham Hotspur will also benefit from Bosideng's strength in the Chinese market, where the two businesses will work together to grow the club's presence and support in a key international territory.

Gao Dekang, chairman and CEO of Bosideng, said: "As one of Europe's leading clubs, it's an exciting opportunity for Bosideng London to support Tottenham Hotspur. With Bosideng a Chinese company new to Europe, it's important for us to have a strong UK presence and we're delighted to be working with Tottenham Hotspur as part of our awareness programme."

"We are delighted that Bosideng will be the Club's new formal menswear partner," said Daniel Levy, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur. "Bosideng London has already established a reputation for style and innovation, values which we share here at the club."

Wayne Zhu, CEO of Bosideng UK, added: "The partnership with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is a key part of Bosideng London's strategy to establish a brand platform within the UK and Europe. I am delighted and excited by our association with such a world famous partner, and I am positive this will be a long and fruitful relationship."

2013-07-29 16:54 The World of Chinese

We're all familiar with palm reading or reading tea leaves to determine our future, but how about your face? Did you know that your facial features may not only decide your wealth, health and relationships but also defines what type of person you are? And it's a pretty big deal in China. Physiognomy, or face reading, has been in Chinese culture for centuries and plays a huge role in everything from wanting to know your future to landing that dream job in a huge firm. As the saying goes "相由心生" (xiàng yóu xīn shēng), personality and thought can be judged by people's faces.

So how does it work? The most important way to judge a person's face in China consists of "五官" (wǔ guān), "三停" (sān tíng), "十二宫" (shí'èr gōng).

"五官" (wǔg guān) is a term which means 'five organs on one's face', namely the ears, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. In physiognomy, each organ is assigned a specific name: ear is "采听官" (cǎitīng guān), related to IQ and longevity; eyebrow is "保寿官" (bǎoshòu guān), related to health and status; eye is "监察官" (jiānchá guān), related to willpower and kindness; nose is "审辨官" (shěnbiàn guān), related to wealth and health; mouth is "出纳官" (chūnà guān), related to happiness, wealth and fortune.

"三停" (sān tíng) means 'three parts of one's face', including 上停 (shàng tíng), 中停 (zhōng tíng), 下停 (xià tíng) . The ideal situation is that these three parts divided shouldn't differ in length and size, and each part should balance.

"上停" (shàng tíng) refers to the forehead between the hairline and eyebrows, representing one's fortune in their young years (age 10-20). If the forehead is radiant and scar-less, the person possesses excellent knowledge and good luck in their youth. Whether they are born into a rich or poor family, they are doted upon by their parents. On the contrary, if the forehead is narrow and scarred, then the person will encounter bad luck in their youth even if they are born into a rich family.

"中停" (zhōng tíng) refers to the space between the eyebrows and the bottom of the nose. This space represents one's fortune in their adult years (age 20-40). If this space is of a good length and scar-less it is a sign that the person is ambitious and energetic; their fortune will peak in their adult years. However, if this space is too long or too short, such a person may have bad luck and should wait for their fortune to arrive by old age.

"下停" (xià tíng) refers to the space between the bottom of the nose and chin, which represents one's fortune after the age of 40. If this part of the face is of a normal length and scar-less, the person is tolerant and healthy. Everything associated with the person will end in success. If the chin is too small or too short, the person may be born weak. They have to work hard from an early age and will encounter misfortune in old age even if they have achieved wealth and power.

If you've rushed to the mirror to check your face and are unlucky enough to discover that perhaps the shape of your nose or eyes fall under the "you-will-never-be-fortunate-in-this-lifetime" category then don't lose hope. You can easily change your luck through plastic surgery!

Going under the knife has been an increasingly popular trend in China, especially among the young and job hunting. If you're a recent survivor of the gaokao (university entrance exams), you too can look forward to a surgery of your choice. Popular choices among fresh graduates are nose jobs and blepharoplasty, also known as double eye-lid surgery. When I first came across this, I thought it was a form of cheating. Surely you can't change your fate by changing your facial features, right? Wrong. Traditional Chinese physiognomists guarantee that you can be in total control of your fate. They argue that there is a close relationship between facial and psychological characters: a change in one means a change in the other.

However, if you're like me and are too scared to go through a procedure at the moment, you can always experiment with your looks via a mobile app called 美人相机 (měirén xiàngjī) or beautiful people camera. The app, which was created by a photo sharing company based in Guangzhou, allows you to take a picture of yourself and add all the affects you need including narrowing the face, modifying your smile and adding make up before posting and sharing it through social media platforms.

Learning the age old art of facial reading is easy and can be applied by anyone whether you're a job seeker, a recruiter or just having fun with friends and family.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission said on Monday it will survey medical service facilities in September.

The survey, the fifth of its kind to be conducted since 1993, is intended to help the government learn about local medical service conditions, demand in the medical sector and the distribution of medical service resources.

The survey will be conducted from Sept. 1 to 25, covering 300,000 people nationwide, according to the commission.

As part of the survey, medical workers will fill out questionnaires in order to collect information on their working conditions and their feelings toward their jobs.

Police confirmed that a technician in Sichuan province committed suicide, sparking speculation that his death was linked to a fatal bridge collapse, Chengdu Commercial Daily reported.

The technician, Yang, was chief engineer with the highway division of the transport bureau of Mianyang city.

At 3:27 pm on Friday, a man called police to report that somebody had jumped off a building.

"He was identified as Yang, the 48-year-old chief engineer of the bureau's highway division," said Chen Wen, an information officer in Mianyang.

Netizens speculated that Yang had killed himself because of his role in the design of the Panjiang Bridge on the Fujiang River in Jiangyou, a city under the administration of Mianyang.

The bridge collapsed in the aftermath of a flood on July 9.

Ten people were killed in the collapse.

China's industrial enterprises posted weaker profit growth in June, official data showed Saturday, signaling a continuing slowdown in the world's second largest economy.

The profits of major industrial enterprises with annual revenues of more than 20 million yuan ($3.26 million) grew by 6.3 percent year-on-year in June to 502.42 billion yuan, a decrease of 9.2 percentage points compared with the May reading, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday in a statement on its official website.

Profits generated from the main business activities of these enterprises amounted to 476.89 billion yuan in the same month, down 2.3 percent year-on-year and contrasting with a growth rate of 8.8 percent in May. May was the first time the NBS added the indicator of profits from main business activities to its monthly industrial profit report.

"Since side businesses may also bring a lot of profit these days, the new indicator is now included to better reflect the operating results of industrial manufacturing," Yu Fenghui, a senior official at the Agricultural Bank of China, told the Global Times Sunday.

In a report published on the NBS website Saturday, NBS official He Ping wrote that several factors contributed to the relaxation of profit growth for industrial producers in June. For instance, industrial companies saw their main business revenues grow at a slower pace last month, while their cost per 100 yuan of revenue climbed month-on-month.

Data from the NBS also showed that in the first six months, profits of these industrial enterprises rose by 11.1 percent year-on-year to 2.58 trillion yuan, down from 12.3 percent growth from January to May. Their main business activities registered a 7.2 percent growth during the same period, a drop of 4.2 percentage points compared with the first five months.

"The latest figures are in accordance with China's macroeconomic situation, which is still characterized by continuing slowdown," Yu noted.

"And because of the economic downturn, industrial overcapacity continued to weigh on domestic factories and affect their operating results over the past several months," Yu said.

By the end of June, the value of industrial goods inventory totaled 3.15 trillion yuan, up 7.2 percent year-on-year.

In breakdown, private industrial enterprises posted the strongest profit growth in June, with their combined profits up 15.8 percent year-on-year in the first half to 799.94 billion yuan. State-owned and State-held enterprises reported profit growth of 4.8 percent during the same period, while overseas-invested enterprises reported 14.8 percent profit growth.

General fiscal spending will be further reduced in the second half of this year, the Ministry of Finance announced Friday in a statement on its website.

Finance Minister Lou Jiwei said Friday that a reduction of general fiscal spending is the top priority for the second half of 2013.

General fiscal spending includes government spending on receptions, vehicles and overseas trips, also known as "the three public consumptions."

Fiscal revenue growth has been lower this year than in recent years amid China's economic slowdown.

Premier Li Keqiang said when he took office in March that under the new leadership the three public consumptions would be reduced. President Xi Jinping also called for an effort to curb excessive spending.

China's land supply for property development hit a record high of 82,400 hectares in the first half of the year, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday, citing data from the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR), the country's land watchdog.

This represents year-on-year growth of 38.8 percent and a jump of 17.3 percent from 2011 when the reading rose to its second highest level, according to the MLR statistics, which also indicated that land supply for residential use soared 36.9 percent year-on-year to 55,300 hectares in the first half.

Local governments nationwide have stepped up land supply for residential use this year, said the Xinhua report, quoting Sun Yinghui, director of policy and law with the ministry.

Out of China's 31 provincial regions, only four saw a decline in supply of land while the rest all posted rising supplies, Sun revealed, noting that Beijing as well as Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces were among the areas seeing the biggest jumps.

The surging figures underscore the Chinese government's pledge to boost land supply as a way of putting the brakes on runaway home prices.

Average new home prices in 70 major Chinese cities climbed 0.8 percent in June from a month earlier, easing slightly from May's month-on-month gain of 0.9 percent, according to Reuters calculations from data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

On a year-on-year basis, however, new home prices rose 6.8 percent in June, the fastest pace since the Reuters calculation started in January 2011.

The China Land Index, released Sunday by the MLR, also pointed to a continuously red-hot property sector. The index neared an alarming level in the second quarter, up 29.5 percent from the previous quarter and 11.4 percent from a year earlier, said the ministry, citing soaring property investment as the main force driving up the index.

Options trading pilot gets closer

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said Friday that it's planning to launch a pilot program for options trading on individual stocks in the Chinese mainland, indicating the regulator is trying to provide more hedging tools for institutional investors in order to increase stock market trading volumes.

The CSRC said at Friday's press conference that it is still researching risk control mechanisms for the program, and gave no timetable for its launch.

"The launch of options trading on individual stocks means more equity derivatives can be used as hedging tools in the mainland financial market," Li Daxiao, research director at Shenzhen-based Yingda Securities Co, told the Global Times.

"The new equity derivatives could encourage investors to invest in strong stocks such as blue chips rather than to speculate on junk stocks," Li said.

During recent years, China has been looking to diversify its capital market by allowing more kinds of financial derivatives to be traded.

For instance, China started stock index futures trading in 2010, and launched a pilot refinancing program in August last year to boost margin trading.

Early in March this year, Gui Minjie, chairman of the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE), said during a press conference that the exchange was planning to launch options trading for individual stocks this year, although he gave no further details regarding the timetable.

The SSE started simulated options trading in June this year, to trade shares of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and units of Huaxia Capital Management's China 50 exchange-traded fund.

"Individual investors may need a huge amount of money in their premium accounts to conduct options deals, which should be higher than the margin required for trading equity index futures," Li explained.

Currently, investors need to have at least 500,000 yuan ($81,500) in their margin accounts to trade stock index futures.

Moreover, individual investors without a professional financial background should be cautious of entering into the market due to the high risk involved, Li said.

He added that investors will be required to pass a test before they are given permission to trade.

At least 18 more people have been detained in China in connection with a corruption scandal involving British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, state media reported, giving more details on an investigation that has rocked the company.

China's state radio reported late on Friday on its website that police in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, had "recently held, in accordance with the law, 18 GlaxoSmithKline (China) employees and some medical personnel."

It provided no details of the detentions, nor said exactly when they took place.

Zhengzhou police news department said they were "unaware of the situation."

A GSK spokesman in London declined to comment.

Chinese police had previously announced the detention of four Chinese GSK executives in connection with allegations that GSK funneled 3 billion yuan (US$489 million) to travel agencies to facilitate bribes to doctors and officials.

GSK has admitted that some Chinese executives appeared to have broken the law but Chief Executive Andrew Witty said on Wednesday that head office had no knowledge of the alleged wrongdoing.

Prescribe more drugs

Xinhua news agency said certain GSK employees were "suspected of offering bribes to doctors, asking them to prescribe more drugs in order to grow sales, and in the meantime, push up drug prices."

Xinhua cited an interview with a man surnamed Li, who it said was a regional sales manager for GSK responsible for selling respiratory drugs to more than 10 hospitals in Zhengzhou. Li gave details of how the corruption worked.

"They invited doctors to conferences to help practitioners increase influence. They also established good personal relations with doctors by catering to their pleasures or offering money, in order to make them prescribe more drugs," Xinhua reported.

"A 35-year-old female medical representative surnamed Wang, working under Li, said she entered doctors' offices to act as their assistant, and meet their needs as much as possible, even their sexual desires," the report added.

"Wang said GSK China's executives knew this, and some executives gave clear directives to the sales department to offer bribes to doctors."

GSK this week appointed one of its top European executives as head of its operations in China.

He Zi claimed her second title of the FINA world championships and kept up China's dominance at the diving pool with an easy win in the women's 3-meter springboard in Barcelona.

She led after every round on the way to a total score of 383.40 points. The real drama was for the other spots on the podium. China's Wang Han held on for the silver with 356.25, while Canada's Pamela Ware pulled out the bronze with 350.25.

China has won eight of nine events at the scenic Montjuic pool overlooking the city.

The final event of the traditional diving competition is the men's 10-meter platform today. Olympic gold medalist David Boudia will try to prevent an American shutout and showed he hasn't lost his London form, leading after the semifinals.

Boudia opening dive yesterday received one perfect 10 and nothing lower than a 9.0 from the judges. He led through all six rounds, finishing with 534.40 points.

China's Qiu Bo, the silver medalist behind Boudia at the London Olympics, led after the morning preliminaries. He only finished sixth in the semifinals after a poor first dive, though still good enough to advance.

Mexico's Ivan Garcia was second, followed by Germany's Sascha Klein. Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Daley was seventh despite a triceps injury that required treatment.

Elsewhere, Germany's Thomas Lurz won another gold medal at the championships yesterday, touching first in the grueling 25-kilometer open water.

The 33-year-old Lurz took his second gold of the championships and seventh career victory at the worlds. He won in 4 hours, 47.27 seconds, beating Belgium's Brian Ryckeman by 0.4 seconds. The bronze went to Russia's Evegenii Drattcev, who edged out American Alex Meyer for a spot on the podium by 0.1 seconds after nearly five hours in the waters of Barcelona's scenic harbor.

On the women's side, Italy's Martina Grimaldi claimed victory by an even closer margin - one-tenth of a second ahead of Angela Maurer, denying the Germans dual victories at the last two open water events of these championships.

Maurer thought she had won on her 38th birthday, the scoreboard initially showing she had touched first. She grabbed a chair, totally exhausted. There was nothing she could do when the official results flashed on the scoreboard, flipping the order of the top two. Grimaldi's time was 5:07:19.7. American Eva Fabian claimed the bronze.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday pledged to strengthen the Philippines' maritime defence capabilities.

"For Japan, the Philippines is a strategic partner with whom we share fundamental values and many strategic interests," Abe told a joint news conference with Philippine president Benigno Aquino after their meeting in Manila.

Abe said his visit was intended "to strengthen the relations with the Philippines in all areas," - including politics, security and the economy.

He cited 10 patrol boats that Japan is providing to the poorly-equipped Philippine coast guard.

The Filipino coast guard and navy have been at the forefront of tense encounters with naval and maritime surveillance vessels from China.

Japan earlier this year announced it would make loans to the Philippines to purchase the 10 Japanese patrol vessels for its coast guard.

"The prime minister and I agreed to strengthen maritime cooperation which is a pillar of our strategic partnership," Aquino said yesterday.

Abe said his party's decisive victory in the upper house of the Japanese parliament would help him pursue his vision of Tokyo's role in the region - many parts of which were under brutal Japanese occupation during World War II.

He sought to assure the rest of Asia that his vision for a more robust Japanese armed forces would not threaten the region's peace and security.

"I intend to further proceed with strategic diplomacy which will contribute to regional and global peace and security," he said.

Abe has pledged to loosen limits on the military in Japan's pacifist, post-war constitution and stand up to China over their East China Sea dispute.

He acknowledged at a separate news conference, after he appeared with Aquino, that a more assertive Japanese military was a sensitive issue.

"I intend to explain politely so that the countries in the region will not have any misunderstanding," he said.

As Abe and Aquino met at the presidential palace, about 80 protesters, including elderly women who said they were former "comfort women," protested nearby, holding signs demanding reparations from Japan.

Woman dies after eating toad soup

A woman who ate toad soup in a bid to cure cirrhosis of the liver died from toxins contained in the amphibians, city food safety officials reported Friday.

The 57-year-old's husband, who is suffering from cancer, also took some of the toad soup - a traditional folk remedy - but survived following treatment.

Officials said the couple from Hongkou District asked their son to bring live toads from Rudong County of neighboring Jiangsu Province as they believed toad soup could treat their diseases.

The couple boiled the toads and ate the soup on Wednesday morning. They went to hospital in the afternoon when symptoms of poisoning began to appear.

Officials said the woman was already in a poor health and vulnerable to the toad toxins.

She died at 6pm in the hospital. Her husband is in stable condition.

"This was the first time that a person has died from eating toads in Shanghai in recent years," said Gu Zhenhua, vice director of Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.

Toads have also long been used in tradition Chinese medicine. As the amphibians live in cool, damp places, it is believed that ingredients from them can clear heat from the body, remove toxins and kill cancer tumors.

Gu warned the public against making their own toad remedies, instead advising them to follow the advice of doctors.
