A primary school in central China has established a "male principle office" in a bid to boost masculinity among the male students.
The office, managed by 10 male head teachers, in Yucai Primary School in Hubei's Wuhan City, will take the students to participate in outward bound activities to "cultivate courage and a passion for sport." They will also give lectures to classes with very few male teachers on a regular basis, according to the school.
An official with the school said that some of the male pupils "act like little girls" due to a lack of male teachers.
"For example, some students try to imitate female teachers during morning reading sessions," said the official. "Their voices even sound effeminate."
Of the school's 104 teachers, only 24 are men. Many men refuse to become primary school teachers due to the workstyle, responsibility and low payment, according to the school.

China's new rules that will further relax the quota allocation and foreign exchange control is credit positive for foreign asset managers, Moody's said in a report on Friday.
Earlier this month, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange of China announced that it will give licensed foreign institutional investors -- those participating in the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFII) program -- more flexibility to invest in onshore investment products.
Following the change, the quota allocation process, which determines how much any given foreign investor can invest directly in Chinese assets, is simpler and more transparent, and the quota limits have been relaxed.
This regulatory liberalization is credit positive for QFII-licensed foreign asset managers, such as BlackRock Asset Management and UBS Global Asset Management, as they will enjoy more flexibility in the way they manage their cross-border investments, Moody's said.
This additional flexibility will, over time, favor asset inflows from foreign institutional investors, whose current investments in Chinese capital markets remain marginal, Moody's said.
The rule changes have removed some of the barriers to redemption and repatriation of funds, which in turn will lead to higher liquidity, Moody's added.
Since December 2002, when the QFII program was launched with a total quota of 4 billion U.S. dollars, China has simplified and relaxed access to the QFII scheme, allowing more foreign institutions to invest a growing amount of assets.

A rural middle school in east China has caused heated discussions after its authorities gave students pork as a scholarship prize.
Shiqiaotou Middle School in Zhejiang's Wenling City awarded 45 "excellent students" with "scholarships" during a new school term ceremony on Thursday. The first prize winners each received 2.5 kg of pork, while second prize winners got 1.5 kg.
It's the third year that the school has distributed pork scholarships, according to Wu Guanghui, the school head master.
"We usually give out the meat before Chinese Lunar New Year, but this year we delayed it as the school closed much earlier than normal because of the weather," Wu said.
According to Mr. Yang, a teacher at the school, 84 kg of pork was distributed.
"Our first prize scholarship is 50 yuan (7.60 U.S. dollars), but we changed to pork of the same value," Wu added. "Just imagine -- an entire family can sit together and eat the meat won by their children, they must be proud."
Many netizens think the pork scholarship is "interesting" and "fresh."
"I think it's innovative," wrote one user of microblog Sina Weibo. "When I was in middle school, I once won a bag of washing power."
"It's great, as long as the pork is safe," wrote another Weibo user, referring to a series of scandals in China's food industry.

The Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (ZHIDZ), located in eastern China's Shanghai city, unveiled an enterprise park in Boston on Friday to promote China-U.S. technological innovation.
The Zhangjiang-Boston Enterprise Park is a new model of China-U.S. technological cooperation under the collaboration between the administrative committee of the ZHIDZ and the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, a U.S. organization working to develop investment partnerships with China.
The park, to be operated and managed by a China-U.S. joint venture, will gather innovative resources from universities, enterprises and institutes in both countries and integrate research and development incubation, industry, services, trade and finance.
Six innovation centers covering life science and biomedical technology, health care, artificial intelligence, semiconductor and integrated circuitry, new energy and environmental projects, and network information technology will be built in the park.
The park will also serve as an international platform for entrepreneurship that not only streamlines Chinese companies' investment in the United States, but also facilitates entry of U.S. products and technologies into the Chinese market.
When addressing the opening ceremony of the park at the Massachusetts State House in Boston, Wang Zhigang, China's vice minister of science and technology, expressed his belief that the park will bring "tremendous benefits" to the two cities, the two countries, and technological advancements and innovation in the world.
Echoing Wang's view, Charlie Baker, governor of Massachusetts, said that the park will not only create more jobs in and boost the economy of his state, but also provide good opportunities for companies in Massachusetts and China to seek new cooperation in research and development, new products and innovation.
Zhang Qiyue, Chinese consul general in New York, told Xinhua after the ceremony that the park could have demonstration effects as China has established high-tech parks at home over the years, and that more and more Chinese companies will have the opportunity and capacity to go global.

FIFA's member associations Friday elected Gianni Infantino to succeed Sepp Blatter as the new President of FIFA since 1998.
Considering Indonesia and Kuwait are currently suspended by FIFA, 207 FIFA member associations present and eligible to vote at the Extraordinary Congress in Zurich.
Candidate Tokyo Sexwale of South Africa decided to drop out before the ballot kick off.
For a president to be elected in first ballot, a candidate requires two-thirds of the valid notes cast.
UEFA General Secretary Infantino led the first round with 88 votes, followed by AFC President Sheikh Salman with 85, Jordanian Prince Ali bin al-Hussein with 27, and French former FIFA executive Jereme Champagne with 7.
However, no candidate received two-thirds of the votes to claim the victory. In the second and any other requisite ballot, a simple majority of the valid votes cast is sufficient.
Infantino secured the victory with 115 votes in the second ballot. Salman received 88 votes.
"We will restore the image of FIFA and the respect of FIFA and everyone in the world will applaud us. I want to work with all of you together in order to restore and rebuild a new era of FIFA where we can put again football at the center of the stage," Infantino said in his acceptance speech.
"FIFA has gone through sad times, moments of crisis, but those times are over. We need to implement the reform and implement good governance and transparency," the 45-year-old lawyer noted.
He will serve until the next FIFA presidential election in 2019.

Structural reform answer to falling global growth, productivity
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2016/02-27/200740.shtml
Feb 27th 2016, 08:44

Structural reform is the answer to faltered global growth and receding productivity gain, said officials at G20 meeting in Shanghai on Friday. But the sequencing of reform measures also matter to prevent unintended negative effects, they said.
"Whether the world could deliver strong, exclusive and sustainable growth really depends on the pace of structural reform," Finance Minister Lou Jiwei said. "The overall reform of G20 has lagged expectations in recent years, so it is critical to strengthen the G20 reform agenda."
His remarks are seen as a nuanced criticism that seven years after global financial crisis, governments around the world still have been mainly relying on monetary easing to stimulate economy at the expense of structural reform.
A report released by OECD on Friday struck the alarm bell by revealing that productivity gain has decelerated in advanced economies since 2000, and also in emerging economies recently. It warned that the pace of reform has steadily declined since 2011-12.
"At a time that called for accelerated reform, leadership and political guts, the reform actually slowed. It is deeply disturbing," said Angel Gurria, secretary-general of OECD.
International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde echoed the sentiment. She said in the "fragile environment", countries need urgent actions not only to boost economic potential, but also to boost confidence about the recovery and near-term growth.
However, Lou warned that while structural reform is needed and can boost long-term growth potential, some would take time to see benefits and might have deflationary effect in the short term. So it is important, especially during depressed time, to "get the sequencing right" and implement reforms that take shorter time to see effects and those that could boost aggregate demand.
Lou cited the example of cutting red tapes, tax cuts that encouraged innovation, and greater internal migration ¡ª they are structural reform policies that in effect bolster demand.
Commenting on fiscal deficit this year, Lou said the country's deficit ratio is set to rise, without elaborating specific number. Most economists expected China's ratio of fiscal deficit as a percentage of GDP to rise to above 3 percent from last year's 2.3 percent.
"Unlike other economies, China has room for fiscal policy," Lou said. But he later warned against complacency, stressing that the room is not "infinite", which could run its course if reform agendas are delayed.
"You don't want to be pushed to the edge of cliff and then start reform," he said.
Lagarde also noted the supply-side reform could risk tightening demand, which is why she called for "a mix of mutually reinforcing demand and supply policies".
"For example, where labor market reform leads to job losses, demand policies can support employment by boosting firms' expectation about future output. Fiscal policies can also be used to support workers who get laid off," she said.

A healthy test tube baby was born Wednesday in northwest China's Shaanxi Province from an embryo frozen 12 years ago, a record on the Chinese mainland.
On Wednesday morning, a 40-year-old woman gave birth to her second son, weighing 3,440 grams at birth at Tangdu Hospital in provincial capital Xi'an.
She suffers from blocked fallopian tubes and polycystic ovary syndrome, a health problem that can affect a woman's fertility and pregnancy. She began trying to get pregnant through IVF in 2003. That year, doctors harvested 12 of her eggs and created 12 embryos with her husband's sperm. They implanted two fresh embryos to her womb, and froze the remaining seven that they considered viable.
Li gave birth to a healthy boy in 2004, and has since spent three yuan (around 50 cents) per day to store the embryos in the hospital in case of an emergency. Last year, when China dropped its one-child policy, she decided to have a second child.
Three embryos survived the thawing process. The two best were implanted in her womb, but only one survived.
"The success rate of implanted thawed embryos is more than 40 percent in our hospital, so doctors usually place more than one embryo at a time," said Wang Xiaohong, director of Tangdu Hospital reproductive medicine center.
"Our first boy is 12 years old now. The purpose of freezing the embryos was to have a second child some day, and luckily, we succeeded," said her husband.
Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born in Britain in 1978, and about five million babies have been born worldwide through IVF since. The first test-tube baby on the Chinese mainland, Zheng Mengzhu, was born in 1988.
The infertility rate is high in China. China Population Association statistics from 2012 showed 40 million people with fertility issues, accounting for around 12.5 percent of the population at child-bearing age.
"IVF is one of the most effective assisted reproduction techniques for treating of infertility," said Wang.
Tangdu Hospital began to freeze embryos for infertile couples in 2003. Up to now, it has frozen around 100,000 embryos, thawed more than 27,000, and created 4,293 healthy test-tube babies.

Walmart, the world's largest retailer, will open 30 new stores in China in 2016, Walmart China president and CEO Sean Clark said Thursday.
Besides the 30 new stores, Walmart will upgrade 60 existing stores and expand its logistics and distribution centers. It will also introduce a cross-border e-commerce service in 2016, according to Clark.
Walmart will launch its first community shopping center in China in 2016. The center, in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, will be wholly designed, constructed and managed by Walmart, he said.
The 100,000 square meter Zhuhai Mall will cost 600 million yuan (about 92 million U.S. dollars), according to earlier media reports.
Walmart entered the Chinese mainland in 1996 and had 433 outlets in 169 cities across the country by the end of 2015.

Abbot Hsing Yun, one of Taiwan's most influential monks, donated a Buddha head statue to Chinese mainland in Beijing on Feb 26, 2016.
The head statue, carved during Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577 AD), originally belonged to Youju Temple in Lingshou county, North China's Hebei province. However, it was stolen and lost overseas in 1990s. Abbot Hsing Yun received the statue as a gift from his follower in 2014. The head statue will debut along with the body statue at National Museum of China on March 1, 2016. After the exhibition, the statue will be preserved in Hebei Museum in Shijiazhuang city, North China's Hebei province.

The Argentine ambassador-designate to China and the Chinese ambassador in Buenos Aires discussed future bilateral collaboration on Thursday.
"The creation of the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014 marked a milestone for bilateral development," said Yang Wanming, the Chinese ambassador.
Political ties between the two countries have grown stronger and they have maintained good cooperation at international forums such as the United Nations and the Group of 20 for the interests of emerging countries, he said.
Argentina's ambassador-designate to China, Diego Guelar, said that Argentina and China can build "a brotherhood without limits."
He hailed China's growing international influence. "China has gone out to the world, buying and partnering with companies. Our region must also integrate with China. We have much to do together," he said.

China to consider cultural relics protection when evaluating officials
http://www.ecns.cn/2016/02-26/200725.shtml

China's central government is considering weighing local officials' role in cultural relics protection more heavily in order to strengthen enforcement.
Efforts and success in protecting cultural relics will be considered in the performance evaluations of officials, said Gu Yucai, deputy head of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, at a press conference on Friday.
Cultural heritage protection in China is often met with weak enforcement and lack of funding as officials' performance is mainly assessed based on their economic achievements.
Gu made the comments when explaining a policy document on cultural relics protection, which is still being modified and has yet to be released.
The directive will also likely add a clause that will hold officials accountable for any damage or theft of cultural relics, even when officials have been promoted or have retired, according to Gu.
The directive is in line with a draft law on the protection of cultural relics, which says officials will be evaluated on their efforts to protect cultural relics. Public opinion is currently being solicited on the draft law.

The "Zun of Peace," an ancient Chinese-style wine container presented by China to the United Nations as a gift, was placed Thursday on permanent display at the UN headquarters.
"I hope that the 'Zun of Peace' will not only enrich the cultural environment of the UN, but also inspire people with values shared by China, other members and the UN -- dedication to a better world," said Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the world body, at a ceremony.
The "Zun of Peace," modeled after ancient ceremonial vessels, was made by 70 master craftsmen for over 10,000 hours and went through more than 100 cloisonne-making procedures, he said.
It is crafted with the Chinese cloisonne technique, a centuries-old homegrown artistic skill listed as China's national intangible heritage in 2006.
Liu said that this piece of traditional Chinese art features symbolism and carries profound messages of good will and aspirations.
With the color of "China red," it has dragon-shaped decorations on the top symbolizing expectations for peace, and golden accessories of an elephant head and a phoenix on each side symbolizing world peace and well-being for all peoples.
Carved upon the the body are traditional Chinese auspicious patterns and other decorative designs, like painting of the ancient Silk Road, which implies carrying forward peace and development and promoting the idea of exchanges and cooperation.
Additionally, seven flying doves are carved on the surface to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and its tremendous contributions to world peace.
The gift was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping on behalf of the Chinese government and people at the UN headquarters last September.
The "Zun of Peace" is the fourth gift presented by the Chinese government to the United Nations.

Five Canadian university students win Chinese-funded scholarship

Five postgraduate students of Chinese culture and art from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in west Canada were awarded a Chinese-funded scholarship in Vancouver on Thursday.
Each of the student will get a grant of 2,000 Canadian dollars (1,400 U.S. dollars) from the scholarship funded by the China-based Pan Tianshou Foundation, together with the Vancouver Chinese Culture and Arts Foundation.
Each year, five students will win the scholarship, a five-year program with a total of 50,000 CAD (35,000 dollars) to hand out.
The scholarship "will help build more cross-cultural respect and understanding between China and Canada, and will encourage more local young people to get to know Chinese culture and to build up the friendship between our two sides," Chinese Consul General to Vancouver Liu Fei said at the award ceremony.
UBC's Dean of Arts Gage Averill said his school aims to create global citizens, and the funds provided by Pan Tianshou Foundation would help make that happen.
UBC has seen Chinese students coming to study since 100 years ago. Today, UBC has more than 3,000 students from China, and also has more than 70 active agreements on research and student and faculty exchanges with top Chinese universities.
"When we have visionary philanthropists and foundations willing to help, it allows us to attract the top students and then to send them out into the world to do extraordinary things," Averill told Xinhua.
Pan Tianshou was one of China's most famous modern artists and educators, who died in 1971. In 1984, a foundation was established in his name to promote Chinese art and cultural exchanges. Thursday's event marked the first time the organization has awarded scholarships overseas.
Zhou Yueping, vice chairman and secretary general of Vancouver Chinese Culture and Arts Foundation, said the scholarship grants "can help spread the cultural spirit of Pan Tianshou, as well as help Chinese culture merge into the world."

Family doctors the future of China's healthcare system
http://www.ecns.cn/2016/02-26/200614.shtml
Feb 26th 2016, 09:31

Getting medical treatment has become much more convenient for Wei Xianfang since she joined a family doctor program.
"Going to the village clinic to see the doctor was such a hassle for me in the past, but since I signed a contract with Dr. Liu, whenever I feel under the weather, I can just call her and make an appointment," said Wei, who lives in Sixian Village, Luzhai County in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Liu helped her with inflammation after she accidentally fell on the floor and injured her leg last week. Liu also gave her a blood pressure test and has regularly reminded her to take her medicine after she was diagnosed with high blood pressure in a routine medical exam a year ago.
Going to the doctor has long been a headache for Chinese people. With the country's large population and its limited and unbalanced distribution of health care resources, hospitals are always swarming with patients, leading to long wait times and an unpleasant environment.
Family doctors devote themselves to continuing and comprehensive health care for patients of all ages. Family doctor programs have been introduced in several provinces and regions to ease the pressure on big hospitals and ensure equal opportunity for people to receive medical treatment.
In 2013, Luzhai County was selected as the pilot zone for the family doctor program in Guangxi. Under the system, rural families sign contracts with general practitioners in rural township clinics. The doctors offer one-on-one service for patients, providing basic medical care as well as health consultations.
The program aims to provide better medical service to rural people and encourages people to seek medical care at grassroots medical institutions, reducing the pressure on hospitals in cities.
Statistics show that from 2009 to 2014, government spending on health amounted to 4 trillion yuan (620 billion U.S. dollars), 1.2 trillion yuan of which came from the central government.
Like Liu, many doctors in community hospitals have joined the family doctor program to better serve local patients.
"My phone was on 24/7 during the Spring Festival holiday in case any of my patients had an emergency or a health question," said Zhu Lan, a doctor in a community medical center on Xieshi Street in Xuhui District, Shanghai.
Shanghai started experimenting with a family doctor program in 2011.
Zhu, one of the first doctors to join the program, has signed with 1,060 families living along the street so far.
In Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province, more than 2.5 million local residents have signed up with family doctors, and in Liaoning Province, more than half of the rural population has joined the family doctor program.
Ali Health, Alibaba's health care subsidiary, launched a mobile application in Beijing to connect doctors from grassroots medical institutions and nearby residents. Patients can simply pick up their phones to interact with a doctor.
In the proposal for the 13th Five-year plan covering 2016 to 2020, the central government vowed to build a "healthy China" by reforming its health system, building a basic health care system covering both the urban and rural areas and a modern management system for hospitals.
It called for improving distribution of health resources and basic services, promoting health resources at the rural and grassroots level, developing telemedicine, and promoting family doctors and electronic health records.
According to Dong Fang, head of the grassroots health services office of the Health and Family Planning Commission of Liaoning Province, family doctors can diagnose and treat common diseases such as a cold or cough, and help patients recovering after major surgery at big hospitals.
"Family doctors have provided local residents with better medical services and also encouraged better use of China's limited health resources," said Fu Hongpeng, researcher with China National Health Development Research Center.
According to Fu, family doctors have partly filled the gap between the the large number of patients and limited hospitals.
Zhu Lan has become friends with many of her patients since becoming a family doctor. Many longtime patients who have moved out of the neighborhood still come to her for treatment.
"They trust me," said Zhu. "The tension between doctors and patients will be eased when trust is built."
"I will keep being a family doctor, and I believe it is the future trend for China's health care system," she added.
Li Bin, head of China's Health and Family Planning Commission, said that the government is making efforts to provide each Chinese family a family doctor by 2020.

China will inject 100 billion yuan ($15.3 billion) in the next two years to finance a structural reform in its industrial companies that is expected to upgrade the employability of workers, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said yesterday.
Vice Minister Feng Fei said the money will be used to boost training for workers. Assets that are obsolete and no longer efficient in the restructuring will be disposed, Feng said at a press conference.
Instead of seeking insolvency liquidation, Feng encouraged that inefficient enterprises be merged or acquired.
At the same conference, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Miao Wei said the ministry will co-develop the Made In China 2015 and Internet Plus concepts to nurture entrepreneurship.

First-tier cities show sign of housing market overheating
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2016/02-26/200610.shtml
Feb 26th 2016, 09:27

Destocking the property inventory has been set by the central government as a major task this year.
China's property market took a downturn in 2014 due to weak demand and a supply glut, but recent policies aimed at stimulating demand seem to be having an affect, especially in first-tier cities.
A slew of stimulus packages, including the latest tax cuts, appear to be having the desired effect across the country.
A real estate agent in Beijing said there has been a clear increase in trade over the past week.
"As the deed tax cutting policy has taken effect, we receive around a thousand customers for consultation every day. This number is much larger than before. People see the apparent benefits of the tax stimulation."
But meanwhile, latest stats are warning property markets in China's first-tier cities may overheat."
In January, Beijing saw 25,000 second-hand houses sold, reaching a 27-month high.
The figure comes against the backdrop of the city's record high income from land sales last year that exceeded 30 billion U.S. dollars.
Zhang Dawei, chief analyst with the Centaline Property, says the city's home market is likely to continue heating up.
"From the supply-and-demand perspective, Beijing has around 60,000 houses for sale. But the city sells more than 6,000 houses per month. So, the property destocking process need only take ten months. The supply and demand structure is tense, and some high-priced houses will be very influential to the market pricing."
At the same time, concerns are also rising over the skyrocketing home prices in metropolises like Shenzhen.
The southern city has seen property prices rise for ten consecutive months, although this trend could be checked by further regulation on who can buy.
In Shanghai, property developers have been restricting the supply of new homes on the market, to maintain prices, but also in preparation for a bounce back in the real estate sector.
Analyst Zhang Dawei says with small and medium sized cities still having excessive housing in stock and big cities beginning to face an overheated market, policy makers will need to consider differential policies.
"The effect of regulatory policies is mainly reflected in first-tier cities. But that is running counter to the policy expectation. In the future, the policy may be tailored for different cities to avoid non-rationality rises of housing prices."
It is reported local governments have taken measures to prevent the market from overheating.
Home buyers without Shenzhen household registration will be required to have paid social insurance for three years instead of one.
Also, a guideline is taking effect in Shanghai this month, regulating the distribution of properties. Medium or small sized homes in central areas must account for no less than 70 percent of the market.

China is willing to strengthen security cooperation with Tajikistan, Chinese State Councilor Guo Shengkun said Thursday.
Guo, who is also public security minister, made the remarks during talks with Minister of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan Rakhimzoda Ramazon Hamro in Beijing.
Guo called on the two sides to implement the consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon.
Guo said the two countries should enhance mutual trust and make joint efforts in fighting terrorism, major cooperation projects security, police technology exchanges, and law enforcement personnel training in order to maintain national security and protect people's lives and property.
Rakhimzoda said Tajikistan will expand cooperation with China in the fight against the "three evil forces" -- separatists, terrorists and extremists -- to make greater contribution to bilateral cooperation.

Small and micro enterprises exempt from turnover tax to boost economy
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2016/02-25/200540.shtml
Feb 25th 2016, 16:30

Small and micro enterprises reporting monthly sales below 100,000 yuan ($15,310) should be exempt from turnover tax due to their heavy burdens under the sluggish economy, a survey said.
According to a report issued by the survey and research center for household finance at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, such a tax reduction measure is expected to promote the employment of 2.84 million people, create 228.7 billion yuan social wealth and stimulate economic growth by 0.36 percent.
It estimated the mortality rate for small and micro enterprises will drop further from the present 16.78 percent to 16.74 percent.
The State Council decided that from October 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015, companies reporting monthly sales below 30,000 yuan will be exempt from turnover tax and value added tax.
Gan Li, director of the center said "lifting the minimum threshold for turnover taxes to 100,000 yuan will release a large number of jobs, let enterprises use more capital to make innovations and to boost the economic vitality."
The report showed there are about 70 million small and micro enterprises across the nation as of 2014, with annual output reaching 19.08 trillion yuan, accounting for 30 percent of GDP.
These enterprises account for 237 million people's employment, which takes up 30.7 percent of the country's total employment.
However, the economic conditions for these enterprises is deteriorating. About 9.28 million small and micro enterprises left the market in 2014, and 26.2 percent of these enterprises suffered losses in the second quarter last year, data from the center said.

Diving World Cup: China confirms world supremacy
http://www.ecns.cn/2016/02-25/200542.shtml
Feb 25th 2016, 16:34

China's team confirmed their strength in diving by winning six out of the eight gold medals up for grabs at the Diving World Cup, which came to a close on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
China's presence on the podium was almost a daily occurrence within the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, one of the facilities to be used in the upcoming Rio Olympics in August.
China's first gold in the competition came on Friday, the first day of the event, when Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia won the Women's synchronized 10 meters platform. In this category the silver went to Malaysia (Jun Hoong Cheong and Pandelela Rinong Pamg) and Britain (Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch) finished with the bronze.
The second gold was won on Saturday in the women's synchronized 3 meters springboard. Shi Tingmao and Wu Minxia earned the medal.
The results in this category were exactly the same as in the 2015 World Championships held in Kazan, Russia, with Canada's Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware winning the silver and Australians Samantha Mills and Esther Qin in third place.
On Sunday, Chen Aisen and Lin Yue took their place at the top of the podium after winning the men's synchronized 10 meters platform. They were followed by Germany's Patrick Hausding and Sacha Klein. Britain took the bronze medal thanks to Tom Daley and Dan Goodefellow.
Also on Sunday, the crowds saw Ren Qian, who celebrated her 15th birthday on Saturday, take the gold in the women's 10 meters platform.
Silver went to her teammate Si Yajie while Australia's Melissa Wu came in third.
Shi Tingmao won the women's 3 meters springboard on Tuesday followed by teammate He Zi. The bronze went to Canada's Jennifer Abel.
On the last day of the competition, China's Qiu Bo won the men's 10 meters platform followed by his teammate Chen Aisen. Third place went to David Dinsmore from the United States.
There were only two male category's where the gold medal escaped China. The men's synchronized 3 meters springboard was won by Germans Stephan Feck and Patrick Hausding.
However, China's Cao Yuan and Qin Kai took away the silver medal while Mexico (Jahir Ocampo Marroquin and Rommel Pacheco), considered to be Latin America's strongest country in the sport, came in third place.
Rommel Pacheco also won the men's 3 meters springboard. Pacheco, like all the other Mexican competitors, participated under the flag of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) since the Mexican Swimming Federation was suspended from competitions in January due to breach of contract.
The silver medal went to Jamaican Yona Roshen Knight-Wisdom while Kristian Ipsen from the U.S. took the bronze.
The competition served as a test event for the upcoming Olympic Games.

ECNS Wire

(ECNS) -- China Merchants Bank (CMB) has rolled out facial recognition technology on its latest mobile banking service, allowing customers to transfer 200,000 yuan ($30,620) to 1 million yuan ($153,000) at a time.
Several Chinese banks have followed the lead of online financial giants in using this technology to verify user information, but it is usually carried out in a closed environment such as a bank office or ATM booth.
CMB has now gone further, although the process still needs the remote assistance of banking staff in establishing video contact, National Business Daily reports.
The bank was already using facial recognition technology as a secondary measure to aid bank tellers in verifying customer identities.
A CMB staff member said facial recognition technology in their mobile banking operation helps improve customer experience by enabling transitions at the time and location preferred by clients. ¡¡¡¡
Facing competition from online financial services, China's state-owned banks are more willing to adopt new technology in the mobile payment sector, insiders said.

A buffet restaurant at a Chinese university has closed its doors to students just two days after it opened because it was unable to cope with the huge demand.
Xiamen University, located in southeast China, said the canteen was originally designed to cater to staff and alumni.
However on it's first day in operation (Feb. 22), a long queue of students had formed by lunch time, and the cafeteria made no attempt to exclude the students.
Charging only 25 yuan ($3.8) per person for the buffet, providing hot dishes, dumplings, desserts, fruit, beverages, etc., it innevitably attracted crowds of diners.
Two days later the management decided to tell the students they were no longer able to use the facility.

German and South Korea excel at fusion cooking

Fusing elements of Eastern cuisine with Western techniques is definitely a trend these days, but only a few eateries have excelled at the fusion concept. East is one of them.
Long-time Shanghai restaurateur Stefan Stiller and his wife Yoshi teamed up to open a homey, chic eatery amidst the touristy shops in Tianzifang.
Stefan is a well-known figure in the local culinary world (he ran Stiller's in the Cool Docks), and has teamed up with Yoshi, originally from South Korea. Years ago, the couple ran a restaurant in Germany that received a Michelin star.
Initially, the couple wanted to open an Asian-inspired restaurant with a focus on Gua Bao. After finding the right location in Tianzifang they decided to develop a larger restaurant with casual grab-and-go offerings on the first floor and a North Asian restaurant on the second floor.
At lunchtime, the sleek first floor is filled with people having Baos with different fillings, and delicious ramen perfect for this harsh weather. During the evenings, guests flock to the second floor to experience dishes inspired by the cuisine of Korea, Japan and China.
The style of cooking and presentation is non-traditional, and most preparations are modern interpretations with traditional flavors and background.
"There are certainly many Asian themed restaurants in Shanghai but we believe the type and style of food we are offering was not available yet," said Stiller. For the Japanese dishes, we have a good friend supporting us who is an expert in modern and traditional Japanese cuisine." The second-floor eatery is welcoming and intimate, featuring a blue color scheme. It is an ideal place to hang out with friends or family during the evenings or over a y weekend.
Light marinated king fish (95 yuan) was fresh, and well paired with a mixture of avocado, tomato jelly and watermelon. Ginger beef tataki with lime soy dressing and wild rice salad (105 yuan) was creative and flavorsome. The wild rice gave a different texture when pairing with the extremely tender beef tataki.
Salad with "Cloud-Ear" mushrooms, radish and cucumber (38 yuan) is healthy and light. House-made pickles (28 yuan) is a must order. The small dish is so popular that many guests have asked the owner to sell the pickles in the jar.
Every cold dish I ordered was well executed, flavorsome and innovative. East also takes just as much pride in what goes on its "Hot Dishes" section. Some of the dishes are slow cooked so that the meat is moist and tender.
Korean "Bo Ssam" (258 yuan) was a pure delight. Each guest is asked to take one lettuce leaf and assemble the ssam by wrapping a slice of grilled pork shoulder, kimchi, ssam sauce and an oyster. Essentially, it's a Korean version of surf and turf and the highlight of the menu.
Korean food lovers should also not miss Korean style roasted Rice Cakes with "Red Dragon Sauce" (48 yuan), a real comfort food in the cold season.
East uses high quality ingredients: meats and seafood are mostly imported; vegetables and herbs are from reliable local sources; the seasonings and spices are also imported from Korea or Japan.

Chinese New Year drives record month for New Zealand tourism

Thursday Feb 25, 2016

The Chinese New Year holiday drove a record number of visitors to New Zealand last month, the government statistics agency said Thursday.
Monthly visitor arrivals numbered 343,400 in January, up 14 percent from January last year, according to Statistics New Zealand.
"Visitor arrivals from China picked up towards the end of January, in the lead-up to the Chinese New Year, which occurred in early February this year," population statistics manager Jo-Anne Skinner said in a statement.
"The timing of this popular travel period led to a 59-percent increase in arrivals from China compared with January 2015," Skinner said.
In January 2016 year, visitor arrivals reached a record 3.17 million, up 11 percent from the previous year, with Australia contributing 518,900 holidaymakers, China 285,300 and the United States 153,800.
February was likely to be another strong month for Chinese New Year holiday visitors, but other factors, including a weaker New Zealand dollar were helping too, said Kevin Bowler, chief executive of the government's Tourism New Zealand agency.
"Certainly New Zealand's lower dollar is playing its part and globally, international economies are a long way from the situation we faced during the global financial crisis," Bowler said in a statement.

More than half of the markets in Beijing's suburban Tongzhou District, the site of the capital's new subsidiary administrative center, will be shut down within two years, local authorities said on Thursday.
The Tongzhou government's closure plan covers markets for construction materials, auto parts, small commodities and clothing among other items.
The remaining 46 markets will be "upgraded" -- for example, auction facilities will be added to antiques markets, while home appliance and tea markets will be encouraged to introduce e-commerce service. Those that fail to do so will face closure within two years.
The plan to build the administrative center, shifting some government functions out of crowded downtown Beijing, forms part of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integrated development plan.
