Beijing has won the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach has made the announcement in Kuala Lumpur on Friday afternoon.

This mean Beijing will be the first city to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

In a recorded video presented to the IOC before the vote, Chinese President Xi Jinping says letting Beijing host the Winter Olympics will put a new emphasis on winter sports in China.

Beijing successfully hosted the Summer Olympics in 2008. The capital promises a sustainable and prudent Winter Olympics by taking full advantages of existing venues.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter of appreciation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach on Friday evening, expressing thanks to IOC for its trust and support in selecting Beijing together with Zhangjiakou as the host of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

In the letter, President Xi said, "Today, Beijing together with Zhangjiakou has won the bid to host the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Let me extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, our appreciation to the IOC for its trust and strong support over the years."

President Xi said, "To present a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent Winter Olympics is the aspiration of over 1.3 billion Chinese people. We will fulfill all our commitments and witness, together with the people of all other countries and the IOC, the advent of a new phase in the development of the Olympic winter sports and in the spread of the Olympic spirit."

"The Chinese government and people will implement in good faith the Olympic Agenda 2020, create a new record for the same city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, and make new contribution to the advancement of the Olympic spirit," President Xi said.

South China Sea drill criticisms 'groundless'
http://www.ecns.cn/military/2015/07-31/175204.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 23:08

Analysts have slammed the "groundless" and "exaggerated" allegations made by countries and media outlets who have claimed that China's ongoing military drill in the South China Sea is worsening regional tensions.

China's 10-day-long military training exercise, held east of South China's Hainan Province in the South China Sea, concludes on July 31 and another eight-day military training exercise will kick off in the Bohai and Yellow seas on July 31, a day before China's Army Day.

Vietnamese authorities have urged China to stop the drill as it "violates the country's sovereignty," according to a report published in the US-based Diplomat magazine on Monday.

The Philippine government also said that they are monitoring China's military drill, Philippine media website abs-cbnnews.com reported on Wednesday.

"Such reactions from Vietnam and the Philippines are groundless and they constitute a double-standard," Zhang Junshe, a naval captain and research fellow at the Chinese Naval Research Institute, told the Global Times. "These countries also conduct military drills in the South China Sea with the US, which are more frequent and larger than China's."

The Philippine and U.S. militaries held one of their largest joint drills ever in April in the South China Sea, which involved some 5,000 Philippine troops and 6,500 U.S. soldiers.

Zhang added that China's military exercise has focused on defense rather than offense, which demonstrates China is trying to maintain the stability of the region. However, the joint military drills of the US and the Philippines often simulate battles with China and include island capture exercises, he said. "Such drills are more aggressive and threaten regional peace."

More than 100 Chinese naval vessels and dozens of military aircraft conducted live-fire maneuvers in the South China Sea on Tuesday.

According to a naval officer, the drill, covering the largest area ever, has aimed to enhance the PLA's capabilities in IT-based warfare. Reconnaissance, anti-reconnaissance, interference and anti-interference both on the sea and in the air were designed to be more difficult than ever in this exercise.

The Ministry of National Defense (MOD) stated on July 22 that the drills are regular military exercises scheduled in the military's annual plan, without targeting any other country.

"China's drill is legal and rightful. The overreaction of foreign countries shows that they want to provoke troubles in the South China Sea and are attempting to harm China's interests," a military expert, who requested anonymity, told the Global Times.

The MOD said that the U.S. has militarized the South China Sea by staging patrols and joint military drills in the region.

The U.S. was hyping up the "China threat" and attempting to sow discord between China and other South China Sea claimant countries, ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told a news briefing.

"China is extremely concerned at the United States' drive to militarize the South China Sea region," he said. "What they are doing can't help but make people wonder whether they want nothing more than chaos."

Military experts said that China's drills completely follow their schedule and are normal. "The drills also demonstrate that China has the confidence to defend its territory and citizens if any unexpected incidents occur in the region," Zhang said.

Probable MH 370 debris to be studied in Toulouse: reports
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-31/175202.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 22:01

The plane wreckage found on the Reunion Island will be transferred to Toulouse to be analysed by the General Directorate of Armaments (DGA), reported Thursday the newspaper Le Figaro.

The wreckage piece will arrive Saturday in Toulouse, and will be studied by the laboratory specializing in "investigations after accidents", said Le Figaro.

According to the reports, the debris should be quickly identified because each piece is numbered in an airplane.

The plane wreckage was found on the island on Wednesday, announced the Island prefecture on Thursday, saying it's too early to draw conclusion.

"An aircraft debris was found yesterday morning on the coast near the town of Saint-Andre in Reunion. At this stage, the origin of the debris is not identified. No hypothesis can not be excluded, including being from of a Boeing 777," it said in a statement on Thursday.

France's BEA air crash investigation agency was studying the wreckage, in coordination with Malaysian and Australian experts, it added.

A "closed" suitcase "in very bad condition" was found early in the day in the same place where a plane debris was washed up on French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, local media reported Thursday.

An aviation expert, speaking to IPR agency, said the circulated pictures of the debris which seemed to be a part of the plane wing, had "incredible similarities between a B777 flaperon (of the missing Boeing)."

The report added gendarmerie officers recovered it for "the purposes of the investigation" on the mysterious missing of the MH370 flight.

The flight, a Boeing 777-200, was reported missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, with a total of 239 passengers on board, most of them Chinese.

So far, the plane has not been found despite a massive surface and underwater hunt, which has become one of the biggest mysteries in the aviation history.

Guo Boxiong to be prosecuted for bribery

Guo Boxiong, former vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission (CMC), was expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) for taking bribes, according to a decision made at a meeting of the CPC Central Committee's Political Bureau on Thursday.

He is the second high-ranking military official to be placed under investigation after Xi Jinping became Party and military leader in 2012.

The investigation found that Guo took advantage of his post to seek promotion and other benefits for others and accepted bribes either personally or through his family, said the statement issued after the meeting, reported the Xinhua News Agency.

"His acts seriously violated the CPC's discipline and left a vile impact," it said.

The statement said the CPC Central Committee on April 9 decided to put Guo under investigation, according to the Party's disciplinary rules.

The meeting also decided to transfer his case regarding the "suspected serious crimes of taking bribes" and relevant clues to military prosecutors for handling in accordance with the law.

Guo, 73, was appointed vice-chairman of the CMC in November 2002 and held on to the position until late 2012.

The investigation into Guo's case has shown the Party leadership's determination to strictly manage the Party and the military, and its resolute will to crack down on corruption, the statement said. No matter what position a person holds, he will be severely punished if he violates Party rules or State laws, it added.

Speculation that Guo might also be investigated for corruption spread after Xu Caihou, another former CMC vice-chairman, was investigated for alleged bribery in March 2014.

Xu died of bladder cancer on March 15 this year and authorities decided not to pursue his case.

Guo started his career as a worker in a military factory in his home province of Shaanxi in 1958. He joined the military three years later and worked his way up the ranks.

He became deputy commander of the Beijing Military Area Command in 1993 and in 1997, commander of Lanzhou Military Area Command.

Reports said Guo was last seen in public on April 11, 2013, when he visited Shaolin Temple in Henan Province after he retired from the military.

The latest media reports that mentioned him were on February 16, when Xinhua reported that the central leadership had visited "retired comrades" ahead of the Spring Festival to deliver New Year wishes.

The investigation into Guo mirrored that of former security chief Zhou Yongkang, starting from a peripheral probe into people with close ties to him.

The military disciplinary watchdog announced an investigation into Guo Zhenggang, son of Guo Boxiong and deputy political commissar of Zhejiang provincial military command, in early March just before the opening of the annual legislative and political advisory meetings, stating that the probe started in February.

The 45-year-old military "rising star" had just been promoted to major general in mid-January.

Guo Zhenggang is one of nearly 40 senior military officials reported to be under investigation this year.

Wu Fangfang, Guo Zhenggang's wife and a businesswoman based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is likewise being investigated for fraud, news portal caijing.com reported.

Wu married Guo in December 2012, about a year after she ended her 21-year first marriage.

Wu reportedly owned an unfinished building that was supposed to house a hardware market on military-owned land in Hangzhou. During construction, Wu's company began to sell commercial space in the mall, collecting more than 500 million yuan ($80 million) from some 2,000 investors and would-be tenants. The 300,000-square-meter mall was due to be completed in 2011, but was never finished.

A series of news reports about Wu's business network as well as Guo Zhenggang's promotion path in the military were released soon after. Several military officers also said during the two sessions that more "tigers" will be caught.

The Chinese military released two lists in January and March of 30 senior military officers under investigation for corruption.

Its flagship newspaper, the People's Liberation Army Daily, has since published a number of commentaries vowing to clean up corruption in the military.

The defense ministry also recently said that the negative impact of Xu Caihou's actions must be eliminated and that people involved in his case will be punished despite his death.

Mainland markets not influencing Fed: experts
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-31/175206.shtml

U.S. central bank leaves interest rates unchanged

The U.S. Federal Reserve announced Wednesday it would keep interest rates close to zero, but the decision was not due to concern over fluctuations in China's stock markets in recent weeks, experts said Thursday.

After a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday of its policy-making body, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Fed said in a statement that the current 0 to 0.25 percent target range for the federal funds rate remains "appropriate."

Some investors and analysts have argued that the Fed's decision was driven partly by concerns about China's economic uncertainties, especially the recent fluctuations in mainland bourses.

David Kostin, chief U.S. equity strategist at Goldman Sachs Group, said that many investors believed that China's economic uncertainties might lead the Fed to delay raising interest rates until 2016, because these uncertainties, including China's A-share plunge, have raised concerns about China's growth prospects and the potential knock-on effect on global growth.

"The concerns have outweighed the boost from U.S. economic acceleration," Kostin was quoted as saying by a Wall Street Journal report Monday.

News portal ifeng.com Thursday also cited an unnamed investor as saying that China's stock market volatility had made the Fed reluctant to raise interest rates at the current stage.

The investor noted that China's market plunge, along with some other factors, could lead to global economic instability, which would hinder the recovery of the U.S. economy.

Mainland stock markets have slumped since mid-June, and the central government has announced a number of measures to restore stability.

However, Wang Dong, deputy executive director of the Institute for China-U.S. People-to-People Exchanges at Peking University, told the Global Times Thursday that overseas capital has limited access to domestic financial markets, and the influence of China's stock performance on foreign markets is too small to be able to sway any major economic policy decisions.

The U.S. business channel CNBC on Tuesday also cited several economists as saying that the Fed is more concerned about China's real economy, which has been under pressure, than about the capital markets.

Yu Yongding, an economist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that when the Fed considers interest rates, it would focus mainly on the situation in the U.S., with other countries having limited influence on its economic decisions.

"The most important reason why the Fed decided to maintain the current interest rates is because the U.S. economy, despite recent pickups in certain areas, still has not sent a very clear signal of a complete and stable recovery," Yu told the Global Times Thursday.

The Fed also pointed out that economic activity in the U.S. has been expanding "moderately" in recent months. While the labour market and the housing sector saw some improvement, areas such as exports continued to stay "soft," it noted.

In the statement, the FOMC didn't provide any clues as to when interest rates would be raised, noting that it will take into account "a wide range of information" when assessing how long to maintain the current interest rates.

But experts believe a rate rise will come soon. Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JPMorgan Chase, was quoted by the New York Times Wednesday as saying that the Fed statement "leaves the door wide open to a September liftoff." The FOMC next meets on September 16 and 17, according to the New York Times report.

Norman Chan, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), said that the time is approaching for a U.S. rate rise. He also cautioned that it could have an impact "on global fund flows and asset markets, and may lead to greater market volatility," according to an HKMA statement on its official website on Thursday.

Wang from Peking University also said that the coming rate rise could lead to capital flight from China, but emphasized that the scale would probably be "very small."

'Role model' rape victim asks public to focus on human trafficker
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-31/175205.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 23:11

Gao Yanmin, the female teacher from North China's Hebei Province at the center of a public debate after local media cited her as a role model while largely ignoring coverage of her abduction and rape, said people should vent their ire on the human trafficker instead of her and her family, the Global Times learned Thursday.

A Global Times reporter went to Xiashan village, Baoding, Hebei to visit Gao Thursday morning.

Gao said she is annoyed by the recent public attention and wants the public to give her peace.

"It [the public debate] is harmful. I only want a peaceful, quiet life," Gao said.

She explained that several police officers visited her on Wednesday night, claiming that they wanted to investigate her abduction 20 years ago. The policemen left Wednesday.

The visit from the police has shocked her and her family. Gao said her father-in-law has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Gao said he was frightened by the police visit.

The police should not investigate her family but the human trafficker, she said.

Gao's phone has been ringing and has received tons of messages since Wednesday afternoon, but she has not read any of them, she said, adding that she is worried that the public attention will affect her daughter who will be taking the national college entrance examinations next year.

"My child has grown up, it is meaningless to talk about the past," Gao explained.

Gao has been teaching in Hebei's mountainous Xiashan village following her kidnapping in 1994 from a train station in Shijiazhuang, provincial capital of Hebei.

But the story has recently attracted growing criticism for neglecting her ordeal, after the old story was reposted by a commentary on a public account on WeChat entitled "A nation's shame: abducted woman praised as the most virtuous teacher."

Gao said her father-in-law is nice to her, despite some initial conflicts.

She clarified that she is not angry about her father-in-law but thankful that he paid the ransom money.

"I grasped his leg, begged him to help me from the trafficker. But the trafficker said I could go only if money was paid. My father-in-law pitied me and paid the money," she said.

"I never access the Internet. I am not familiar with the government policies. I seldom left the mountain. All I want is a peaceful, quiet life where no one would harm my family," she said.

Stocks edge down as turnover halves from its peak
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/07-30/175195.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 07:48

Stocks closed lower on Thursday after swinging between gains and losses, as margin traders kept unwinding their leveraged position and trading turnover halved from its peak.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed at 3,705.77, down 2.2 percent, marking its fourth-time loss over the past five days, while the Shenzhen Component Index slumped 3.3 percent to 12,395.92.

The ChiNext Index, a Nasdaq-styled gauge tracking Shenzhen-listed growth enterprises, plunged 4.9 percent. Stocks such as video-streaming software platform Beijing Baofeng Technology Co and financial information system provider Amarsoft dived by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Banks and brokerages retreated in general, with Guosen Securities, Shanxi Securities and Founder Securities tumbling more than 6 percent. Ningbo Bank and Nanjing Bank fell 4.4 and 4 percent respectively.

Trading volumes at the two markets reached 1.1 trillion yuan, while the outstanding balance of margin trades at the Shanghai bourse dropped to a four-month low to 881.7 billion yuan as of Wednesday.

The Shanghai gauge swung nearly 200 points between gains and losses on Thursday before declining sharply in the last hour of trading. The retreat almost reversed Wednesday's rally, when regulators vowed to investigate into earlier "massive sell-off".

China's equity market experienced more sell-offs, which prompted further market concerns over its economic outlook for the second half of the year, said Nomura in a note released on Wednesday morning, adding that improvement in growth momentum will hold, driven by faster infrastructure investment, and monetary policy easing will continue.

The CSI 300 Index closed at 3,815.41 on Thursday, down 2.9 percent.

Shaanxi's H1 revenue continues to grow despite plunging oil prices

Shaanxi province, the biggest oil producer in the country, reported that revenue in the first half of the year increased by 12.1 percent, despite the plunge in crude prices.

Xia Xiaozhong, spokesperson of the province's finance department, said on Tuesday that infrastructure projects and equipment manufacturing helped revenue reach 103.47 billion yuan ($16.72 billion) for the first six months.

Xia predicted that China's economic growth will continue to slow in the second half and that the energy sector, including oil and coal industries, will suffer from weak demand.

"The local government has carried out series of policies including tax reductions to help energy companies survive the tough market conditions," he said. "In addition, we have helped small and medium-sized enterprises by cutting taxes (of around 9 billion yuan) to support their development."

Netizens question narrative of human trafficking victim turned model teacher
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-30/175197.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 07:54

The case of Gao Yanmin, a woman who was tragically abducted, trafficked and sold 21 years ago to a remote village in Baoding, Hebei province, and who now has been turned into a "role model" by the authorities for becoming a rural school teacher has caused great controversy online, even as local police have begun investigations into her case, reported Hushang Daily, a local paper based in Xi'an, Shaanxi province on Thursday.

Chen Shiqu, chief of the Anti-trafficking Office of China's Ministry of Public Security, stated clearly on his verified Weibo account on the Gao Yanmin case that human traders and buyers should be punished without tolerance and sympathy and victims should be helped.

Gao Yanmin's horrific story ignited public rage about the authorities' inaction after her story was reported in 2006 and she was set up as a role model for people who had been trafficked since she settled down in the poor village where her buyer lives and taught local children in school.

Gao Yanmin was defrauded by two women who said they could find her a job at a train station in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province in 1996. She was abducted and sent to a man in Quyang county in Hebei to be his wife for the price of 2,700 yuan after being resold three times.

At the beginning when she lived with the man, she tried to run away once but was tracked down and beaten up by her husband. Then she attempted suicide three times, but was saved each time. Faced with the stark reality of her condition, she settled down to live on in horror.

She soon had children and worked as a substitute teacher in a local primary school since 2000 where there was a lack of teachers and education resources. She devoted her life to the students with negligible pay and bought books for students who didn't have enough money to keep them in the school.

Gao's plight was put under the spotlight in 2006 when local media heaped praises on her for her devotion to her students and her forgiveness of those who harmed her, dubbing her "the most beautiful rural teacher". A year later, she was nominated for a provincial award as a role model. Her story received wide media coverage and was even adapted as a movie in 2009.

Gao's story has been noticed and posted online again by an Internet user this week then soon spread like a virus on most Chinese news outlets and popular social networks like Sina Weibo and WeChat.

Netizens questioned the narrative that minimized the problem of human trafficking and abduction while focusing instead on Gao's resignation to her fate. They felt that the people responsible for her plight were not held accountable, and that it was a twisted value system that held her up to be a role model for accepting her fate.

A Weibo user said: "I could not understand why the social tragedy and embarrassment became a model." Another Weibo user commented: "How could you have the nerve to ask a victim to shoulder the responsibility while letting the traffickers go unpunished?"

Zeng Yaxian, writer and columnist with news portal sina.com, called for an end of hardships for Gao and a return of her dignity.

Rural schools report fewer 'left-behind children'
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-30/175199.shtml
Jul 30th 2015, 08:02

Rural Chinese schools had half a million fewer children of absent parents in 2014 than the year before, as many were reunited with their migrant worker families, Ministry of Education data indicated on Thursday.

Some 20.8 million "left-behind children" attended rural primary and junior high schools in 2014, according to a ministry report.

"Left-behind children" is the words used in China to describe rural children who usually live with relatives other than their parents, generally their grandparents, while their parents are working away from home.

Last year, the number of rural children attending schools in cities where their parents worked also increased by about 170,000 to 13 million, said the report.

The development comes as the government is making changes to the national "hukou" residence permit system that restricts citizens to accessing services like schools in the area in which they are registered. In some provinces, the children of migrant workers have been granted the same rights as urban residents.

At the same time, authorities are encouraging migrant workers to return home and launch small businesses.

The report also said China had about 155,200 private educational institutions in 2014, 6,300 more than in the previous year. The number of special schools increased by 67 to about 2,000 nationwide, with 394,900 students. The number of nursery schools reached 209,900, an increase of 11,300.

Computer game sales hit $9.7 billion
http://www.ecns.cn/business/2015/07-29/175022.shtml
Jul 29th 2015, 08:00

Sales of computer games in China hit 60.5 billion yuan ($9.7 billion) during the first half of 2015, a 21.9 percent jump compared to the same period last year.

The figures were released by Sun Shoushan, vice-minister of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Film and Television, on Wednesday at the China Joy Exhibition 2015 in Shanghai.

About 44 percent of the sales were software products bought by consumers for terminals, while 34.6 percent were mobile games. Web games accounted for 17 percent of the market while social media games had a 4.2 percent share. Single-player games accounted for 0.1 percent.

From January to June, sales of online games independently produced by Chinese companies reached 45.8 billion yuan, a 33.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

In the last six months, 355 online games were approved by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, among which, more than 88 percent were independently developed by Chinese companies. Meanwhile, export volume of independently produced online games was $1.76 billion, up 121.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Chinese embassy rebuts NY Times editorial on China-Philippines dispute
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-29/175024.shtml
Jul 29th 2015, 08:02

The Chinese Embassy in Washington has called the New York Times' July 17 editorial on the China-Philippines dispute over the South China Sea unfair, stressing that China's approach toward this issue is to hold direct bilateral negotiations.

In a letter published Tuesday in the New York Times, the embassy's Press Counselor and Spokesman Zhu Haiquan said that the editorial titled "The South China Sea, in Court" about the arbitration case raised by the Philippines over rights to the South China Sea, is "not fair."

"China, a latecomer to land reclamation, has been exercising utmost restraint. But the status quo has long been broken by the Philippines and some other claimants, which built facilities, including military ones, on the reefs owned by China," Zhu said.

"China calls on relevant parties to shelve their differences and engage in joint development in the South China Sea. Actually in 2005, China, the Philippines and Vietnam conducted joint marine seismic survey in some areas of the sea. It would have set a good precedent if the Philippine government had not changed its mind," the official said.

"China's approach toward solving the South China Sea issue is to have direct dialogue and negotiation between claimants, which is more effective and sustainable. China and the Philippines had tried such talks before, but the Philippine side unilaterally stopped them in 2012," the diplomat said. "Our door remains open, and we are engaged with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in establishing a code of conduct to ensure peace and stability in the South China Sea until the disputes are settled."

"The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea gives no country the legal right to extend its exclusive economic zone to other country's territories. We do not believe that the arbitration court has jurisdiction, and as a member of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, China is entitled to exclude any third-party compulsory settlement," he said.

On July 17, the New York Times released an editorial written by its editorial board, saying that "a courtroom in The Hague has become an important new battleground in the multinational struggle over the resource-rich South China Sea" and that the Philippines "can qualify to have 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zones."

Green light for green jobs
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-29/175021.shtml

China will implement a new classification system of jobs with special priority given to green roles as the country pushes environmental sectors of the economy.

The latest version was passed on Wednesday and is set to be ratified soon, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

The new system divides jobs into major groups, 75 sub-categories and 1,481 occupational types. The number of roles is down by 547 from the previous system.

For the first time the classification covers green jobs, which includes environmental protection, low-carbon and recycling sectors.

Yin Weimin, minister of human resources and social security, said the revision will help the country further develop occupational education and improve the quality of skilled workers.

It will also help occupation qualification and reduce red tape in job certification, he added.

The new system will also aid authorities in collecting occupational data and conducting occupation comparisons.

What would life be like on 'Earth 2.0'?
http://www.ecns.cn/2015/07-29/175023.shtml
Jul 29th 2015, 08:00

An artistic illustration compares Earth (L) to a planet beyond the solar system that is a close match to Earth, called Kepler-452b in this NASA image released on July 23, 2015. The planet, which is about 60 percent bigger than Earth, is located about 1,400 light years away in the constellation Cygnus, the scientists told a news conference on Thursday. (Photo/Agencies)

For thousands of years, human beings have dreamed about living on another Earth. With the discovery of "Earth 2.0," we are one step closer to that dream.

The newly discovered Kepler-452b is the first near-Earth-sized planet circling around a sun-like star, with the possible existence of a solid surface, water and even life forms.

Imagine living on Kepler-452b, what would life be like?

Q: How can we reach the planet?

A: Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to fly there based on current technologies, since Kepler-452b is 1,400 light years away from us, which means it takes 1,400 years to reach the planet at the speed of light.

But, we can always hope to gain hyperspeed by traveling through a wormhole or by using a warp drive engine like in science fiction novels or films.

Q: Once we land on Kepler-452b, what would we notice immediately?

A: You would feel as if your weight had doubled instantly. A person weighing 70 kg would feel like carrying a 70 kg sandbag all the time, which is quite challenging. This is because Kepler-452b's gravity is about twice as strong as Earth's.

Q: So the planet is not fit for human habitation?

A: Not necessarily. Doubled gravity is not entirely unbearable for human beings. After all, many occupations on Earth involve carrying heavy loads, such as fire fighters.

Living on Kepler-452b, we will grow stronger, with higher gravity serving as extra physical exercise every day. Some researchers predict that humans would evolve into a physically stronger species after living on the planet for tens, even hundreds, of generations.

Q: Is the environment hospitable on Kepler-452b?

A: Maybe for now. But some speculate that a runaway greenhouse effect would occur, with soaring temperatures, turning the planet into a hostile environment for living things, just like what happened on Venus.

The effect would make it awfully hard for oceans to stay on the planet's surface even if they existed. However, this would not occur for at least 500 million years, according to current analysis.

The Silk Road International Music Forum was kicked off in Beijing on July 26. Through October this year, opening ceremony, forums and concerts, will be held in Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu province in Northwest China and Dunhuang, a city of Gansu province famous for the Mogao Caves.

During his visit to Kazakhstan in September 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed that China and Central Asia join hands to build a Silk Road economic belt to boost cooperation. The idea has been widely echoed in Central Asian countries, becoming an encouraging blueprint for Chinese areas along the Silk Road that has linked Asia and Europe for more than 2,000 years.

Dunhuang was a major stop on the ancient Silk Road and is best known for its Buddhist caves with murals and sculptures.

According to veteran songwriter Yan Su, who is one of the consultants of the forum, music along the Silk Road is valuable and deserves much more attention. The 85-year-old also said that many of his works were inspired by the city's scenery and culture when he went there to work.
