Today's date - 12/12/12 - will be a banner day for weddings in the city as the century's last repeating date is seen as auspicious by some to guarantee a happy marriage.
Most marriage registration centers in Shanghai say they're completely booked.
More than 2,900 couples have already made reservations to get married on the date, which means "want to love" twice in Chinese. That is more than the 1,874 couples who said "I do" during the Qixi Festival in August, which is often referred to as Chinese Valentine's Day.
"The day is expected to witness the largest number of couples who tie the knot this year," said Lin Kewu, deputy director of the marriage administration office of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
Although marriage registration centers citywide are expected to be packed, couples who have not made a reservation do not need to worry.
They can also get registered if they have prepared all documents required, the bureau said.
Local cashier Yang Ying picked the date. She said she tried her luck at the Hehuan Road registration site in Pudong as early as November, but there was no reservation spot left. She expected to visit the Baoshan District registration center today.
"I chose the date because I believe it is auspicious and signifies our love," Yang said.
The average registration number per day is about 300 to 400 couples in the city.
However, feng shui master Sammy Au told Hong Kong's The Standard newspaper the triple 12 date is not perfect for marriage and rated it as just a "comparatively lucky day."
Au picked December 18 and 31 as better dates, AFP reported.
Meanwhile, a marriage registration boom is expected to appear on January 4, 2013, which means "love you eternally" in Chinese.
Reservation spots for that date in downtown districts like Huangpu, Xuhui, Jing'an and Putuo and the Pudong New Area have been filled by couples, while a few spots remain in Minhang, Baoshan, Zhabei and Hongkou districts.
