Boao (CNS) -- Participants at the Boao Forum for Asian Young Leaders Roundtable in Sanya, Hainan province, discussed the mission of education on Saturday.
Ma Weihua, president of China Merchants Bank, said that the country's education system does not bring up sufficient innovative talents, which lags behind enterprises' demands.
Education that focuses on teaching knowledge, shaping minds and improving abilities should be upgraded to impart creative abilities to educatees, Ma said.
Zhang Yaqin, corporate vice president of Microsoft, encouraged the young people to have dreams. "Only after all 1.3 billion Chinese fulfill their dreams can 'China Dreams' be realized," he said.
Lin Yu, CEO of NetQin, a Chinese mobile-security firm, who wore a safety helmet to the discussion, said he "feels insecure" about the country's education.
The education system puts too much pressure on children, and it is becoming more difficult for children from poor families to go to college, he said.
Elaine Lan Chao, a Chinese American who served as the 24th US secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009, said China's education should borrow ideas from the United States, which pays attention to cultivating values and views on life.
Peggy Dulany Rockefeller, a fourth-generation member of the Rockefeller family, shared her family education, which values paying back to society.
