(ECNS) -- Chief spokesman for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games Mario Andrada has apologized for Brazilian fans who booed foreign athletes including Chinese women volleyball players. [Special coverage]
Andrada said booing was not the right way to voice support for the home team and the organizing committee doesn't support such behavior.
He also vowed to make more efforts to address the issue, including distributing information about proper conduct and cooperation with athletes.
China's women volleyball team dashed Brazil's hopes of winning a third consecutive Olympic gold medal after defeating the host country in a five-set battle in front of passionate and vocal spectators.
Hours before the match started, Brazil fans were practicing how to cheer their team and distract the opponent's attention. The loud noise, booing and whistling forced many reporters at the site to wear earplugs.
In other matches such as weightlifting and gymnastics, athletes complained of too many boos and hisses.
