Construction has started on a new canal in Shanghai's Jiading District that is expected to improve the area's water quality and flood defenses, the district water authority said yesterday.
The 30-kilometer canal, which will be called the Luoyun River, will be dug along the border between Jiading and Baoshan districts.
It is part of a national water project that will link Taihu Lake with the Yangtze River through Shanghai, said Lu Wen, deputy director of the district's water authority. The Wusongjiang Project will stretch about 120 kilometers from the east side of Taihu Lake to the city's Wusongjiang River. It will then enter Yunzaobang Creek and run through the new canal to the Yangtze River.
"The flood resistance of the district will be greatly enhanced by the new canal," said Lu.
Jiading is quite vulnerable during the flood season. The low-lying district is often flooded when Suzhou Creek in the south runs too high, she said.
Most parts of the district were flooded after the first big rain shower of this year's flood season in June, prompting investment in pump stations and road improvements.
The new canal is expected to lower the average water level in local waterways by 20 centimeters, which should address the annual flooding problem, according to Lu.
In addition to the flood prevention benefits, the new canal is expected to dramatically improve water quality, she added.
Nearly all of Jiading's surface water is heavily polluted ¡ª below grade 5, which is the worst quality level.
After the project is completed, the district can introduce cleaner water from the Yangtze River, bringing the quality up to grade 4, she said.
The new infrastructure will provide recreational benefits as well. Promenades will be built and trees will be planted along the canal for the enjoyment of residents, she added.
Meanwhile, Yunzaobang Creek will be dredged and widened as part of the infrastructure project.
