For fine food in totally laidback surroundings, you can't beat Café Sambal. The sambal in the name refers to a sauce made with chillies and, in this case, lots of sambal.
Food is authentic and quality consistent; over three years in the business and standards remain high, rare in Beijing's all-too-flaky dining scene. The hutong setting is a delight, as is the layout, with a bar area fronting three distinct dining rooms: formal; not quite so formal, and so completely informal that chairs and tables are dispensed with altogether in favour of wall-to-wall cushions.
