Shanghai water tanks to get quality sensors

Quality monitoring sensors are being installed in the water tanks of all Shanghai's residential buildings, officials said yesterday.
The city has around 120,000 water tanks in housing developments, mostly on top of residential buildings, and supplying tap water to each apartment.
Work is starting on the project, with an initial system set to be running by 2017 and installation complete around 2020, said the Shanghai Water Authority.
The sensors will measure water temperature, the amount of chlorine, PH levels and sediment round the clock, sending data to the water authority.
The authority oversees the city's water companies and should the readings indicate any problems, water workers will be sent to clean the tank.
"After the sensors are installed around 2020, the local water company will take full charge of the water quality of water tanks to ensure the safety of tap water," an official with the Shanghai Water Authority said.
Currently, the property management company responsible for a building often cleans its water tank, only involving the water authority if problems emerge.
However, this arrangement has been criticized by some residents ― often in older buildings ― who complain about water quality.
In some cases, while a property management company will claim that a tank has been cleaned according to stipulations, a subsequent inspection by the water authority finds the water to be contaminated.
The cost of the project will be met by the water authority.
Pilot projects are already running.
Some 90 sensors have been installed in buildings in the Pudong New Area, said the Pudong Veolia Water Corp.
